When do you add calmag

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by fred25, May 17, 2023.

  1. When do you add calmag to a hydro setup? Is it something you add every time or do you do it at certain weeks or just when the plant shows it needs it? Also when adding how much per gallon?
    Thanks

  2. Calmag is the most over prescribed supplement.
Only use it if your plant needs it.
    What is your water source?

  3. I did run 100% RO water because my tap water is super hi PPM's
    now I run a 50/50 mix.

  4. I always use calmag unless I'm using calcium nitrate/alt mixes.

  5. I haven't used cal-mag for YEARS in any medium. Even in coco where it's commonly suggested to buffer it, I don't use it.

As if the hobby cannabis cultivation community doesn't have enough little niche weird ideas of fertilization, I think the cal-mag thing is by far the most ridiculous alongside base nutrients.

At some point back in the day, Calcium had to be separated from the rest of the nutrients because it'd fall out of solution. At this point, we've clearly fixed that. There are single part formulas with everything in them. I think there's a lot of carryover from then when cal-mag had to be added separately. If you're using any sort of reasonable base nutrient, it should have the correct levels of calcium and magnesium in the mix. Adding more is no different than adding more of another macronutrient. You can feed too much calcium just like anything else.

The older I get the more I appreciate single part fertilizers. I put it in and nothing else and it works fantastic. It's not as fun to play with as 17 bottles, but my results are consistent.
