Whats up with Canada?

Discussion in 'Marijuana Legalization' started by drewber2635, Jun 25, 2011.

  1. Recently a friend told me that Canada might possibly legalize marijuana, but it all depends on the next election. Apparently one guy is for it and the other is not. So can any one give me the scoop on this? Is the election already over with? I really dont know shit about Canada, but if this is true and if that pro weed guy gets elected, you can bet your ass ill be in Canada.

  2. It IS being legalized on July 11 or something. They figure because doctors wont even permit people who need it to do it,they might as well legalize it.

  3. I thought they already shot this one down

  4. This past Wednesday, a judge granted a stay (decision to strike down the Marijuana laws has been suspended) on the case until the appeal can be heard by the Supreme court, which will likely be in November. If the stay hadn't been granted, the government would have faced legalization in Ontario on July 10th.

  5. Great news for you Canadians if this does follow through

    No.. Actually..

I doubt it'd happen, anytime soon at least..

The (Main) election passed, if anything..

In those terms I'd say Jack Layton was for legalization (very left wing politcs) and Stephen Harper was not too hot on it (Conservative, right wing politics).. So it's accurate, but who'd ever follow through? Also, the Conservative goverment took the majority of votes.

I mean, the next election over here is on the Provincial Level, and those elected will not have that type of power, regardless..

Only way I can see this ever happening is if the NDP wins the next federal (so, country wide for our Prime-Minister) election in four years (and there's a Liberal opposed to Conservative minority).. Then.. Maybe.. But otherwise nope man.

  7. unfortunately jack layton (ndp) is against legalization now....he was for it at one point ( i remember him being interviewed by mark emery) - but not anymore - he says it's 'more complicated' now?

reality is that it will not be legalized in Canada. we are actually moving to harsher sentences for people who grow 6 plants or more (minimum sentencing = fucking stupidity) and i wouldn't be surprised if they made possession laws harsher in the near future...

also note that the government is taking the ability to grow away from those who hold a medical exemption - wonderful bunch our gov is.

the war on drugs (the citizens) is only escalating here unfortunately...

  8. Yea, its becoming a more sorry state for us Canadians. Hopefully the movement will pull through eventually and knock some sense in to the ignoramuses on parliament hill.

Honestly though, if it ends up being legalized in most of the US, I bet you anything Canada will follow in US footsteps and proceed with some sort of decrim/legalization.

  9. Sounds like someone got their mouth stuffed with gold.

  10. i think it's his attempt to go more 'mainstream' - similar to them talking about taking the 'socialist' out of their preamble (if anyone was keeping up with that..)

  11. Where did you here that? My papa talked to somebody who is part of making this pass and he said so far its still july...
