Whats so bad about LED's?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by rataboo90, Feb 13, 2009.

  1. the rays of light coming from an led light can grow a plant but they have a hard time passing through the plants to the lower buds and leaves since there about the same price as hps its better to go with hps more bang for your buck and a higher yield:smoke:

  2. I can find these on eBay for around $225, and whose to say you can't put LED spotlights at the bottom. Here's a video

Notice the spotlights he uses, they can be placed near the bottom. I guess I'm here to change some minds on GC about LED's

  3. Watch the video lol

  4. I found this too!

Good point, but again I'm using LED's for electricity reasons, and I'm a college student. The dude will probably have to sell most of the bud from the 400W to make up for the expense of using electricity. I did forget to mention this is for my personal stash. I wont be sharing with anyone. Oh another thing the guy used 1 LED UFO. I will be using 2-3 which IMO will surpass the 400W. ~ My Two Cents ~

  9. LED technology is simply not yet devepoled enough to grow good cannabis in high yields by itself period. I wish it was, it would be so cool :) don't waste your money on those things just yet. The led ufo first gen didn't live up to the hype, so they've got the 2nd gen now... Notice how you've never seen a grow log for a grow done start to finish with all leds. They're always supplemental lighting.

Think about their claims: the equivalent of a 600W HPS for 90W and HUGE-ASS wet-your-pants yields? It sounds too good to be true, and it is. I don't mean to come across mean or anything, but if you do buy one please do share some pics and such...

  10. When I get my grow setup going in April, I will be using nothing but LED's

  11. I've yet to see one that says anything about huge ASS yields, just the huge ass amount of money you'll save using them.

  12. I'm going to LST too which will increase my yield.

  13. Are there any number crunchers out there that have compared CFL efficiency to LED efficiency?

Please folks, instead of re-igniting an already controversial subject and debating the finer points of CRI, SPD and wavelength, why not just check out any one of the LED threads already posted. I realize there is a giant market for novice gardeners who like to buy fancy/cutting edge equipment, but let's face it, how many professional growers/breeders do you know that use LED's. If they were all the rage and rendered HID's obsolete, we'd see a huge decline in HID sales and an even larger jump in LED grow light sales. What do they have on display at your local hydro shop?? What do they recommend you buy?

And for all but the thickest of skulls, just check out the grow journals here on GC to see what the bulb of choice is. It ain't LED's. Nor will it be anytime soon.

Even though i can't stand these insipid LED threads (which seem to pop up every week like clockwork), i can't help but chunk my $.02 at 'em. It's a wonder how almost every LED thread starts off with the OP asking for advice or opinions, only to argue with the very people they are calling on. If you ask me, i think alot folks went out and bought these things and are now desperately searching for an enabler or someone to give them praise for their choice. Why would someone start a thread asking for advice with no intentions of heeding said advice?

I've said it before and i'll say it again, "when the pros (ie. jorge cervantes, ed rosenthal etc.) switch to LED's so too will i. Till then, have fun playing with your new toys...... i'll be growing some digity-dank with HID's. Care to compare notes in about 3-4 months??

Yes there are. On average, LED's put out about 70 lumens per watt, CFL (varies depending on bulb and fixture) 80-90 lumens per watt.

Here's a source for some info. on Plasma lighting showing some comparative numbers on LED, incandescent and Plasma.... no CFL though, however it's not hard to find that info.---> http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/04/luxim-plasma-lifi-light-bulb-led-cfl.php

  16. i am currently 4 weeks into flowering with an led ufo...i was curious to know if switching to a 1000w hps during my last couple weeks of flowering would increase my yeild...or would it be harmful?

  17. It probably couldn't hurt your yield, but for the real difference to be seen/had you'd want that 1000w cooking during the formation of the buds more than during the ripening. IMO. :)
