Hey guys, yes this is my first post but I have been searching around here for months. I was always able to find an answer to a problem by using the site. Little about myself: I have been outdoor growing for 12 years. I have always grown for personal use only and grown nothing but bagseed. I recently just started growing indoors. I got some Nirvana White Widow and Reserva Privada OG Kush growing right now. They are in week 4 of flowering. It was basically a test run since I am new to indoor growing. My 600w HPS burnt out so I am flowering under a MH (strictly for extra light because my CFL's are not enough) and 2x 100w CFL 2700K for the red spectrum lighting. Everything has gone quite well. Now I am faced with a problem that I have never encountered before. I searched and searched for the answer but cannot find any information. I was wondering if someone could help me figure this out. My OG Kush MAY be hermie, and theres a slight possibility that my WW turned as well. I see what seems to be the start of a sack. Since I grow for personal medical use only, I do not mind a bit of seeds. Im actually quite happy because now I dont have to order anymore! Now here is my question: Lets say the only hermie is my OG Kush. I let it pollenate itself and the White Widow. What i've gathered so far is that the OG Kush will most likely produce mostly hermie seeds. However, the WW would be femanized (WWxOG cross). Correct so far? Now here's my main question: IF they BOTH turn hermie, what would the seeds be? Lets say that the WW gets pollen from itself AND the Kush. Would it be mixed seeds (some pure WW and other WWxOG cross) or does it work by whatever pollen reaches first is the "winner"? Hope to get some information so in case they do turn hermie like I suspect, I will be able to seperate the seeds and know EXACTLY what strain they are for my next grow. I appreciate the help!
Posted two pics. Hope I can at least get confirmation if one, or both, or neither are hermie. First pic is my Kush, second is White Widow. Both of the areas in question is below my fingers and may be hard to see. They are found on each side of the base of some budsites (2 on each side).
I'm not too knowledgeable about hermies, this is just my best guess. I can't tell if they're hermies, the second one looks like it might have some pollen sacs but I'm not positive. If a plant hermies on it's own (without being super stressed), there's a high chance that it will produce Hermie seeds. It doesn't matter if it pollinates a different plant, its still probably going to produce hermies. So say plant A is a hermie and plant B is female. If A pollinates B, B's seeds will probably be mostly hermaphrodites. You could lucky and have a few females too though, and none of them should be pure males. Again, I'm not totally positive on this. I'm pretty sure I'm right though.
I appreciate the reply. I will be mad if both are, but happy if one Is. Yes I've read that it may produce hermie seeds. However, having only a few sacks that I can pluck off, I can still get good bud, and a cross of ww and og kush at that! I mean either way if its hermie or not, its dank! look at the tric's and the sticky fingers on the kush shot haha. I ordered them from the most popular seedbank. Both were "femanized" but if they both turn hermie, I will give them a piece of my mind! Oh and no I did not stress them whatsoever.
If those are really seeds, and not just bloated calyxes (have you dissected one yet?), and you know you didn't have any true males around to pollinate them, then you wouldn't want to germinate those seeds... not unless you want an even seedier crop, next time. Just like when breeding for positive traits; by selecting plants that display such traits, they are passed down to the offspring, and if you use the seeds from a crop with negative traits, you'll see those traits emerging stronger in the following generations. Natural selection, and selective breeding both work the same way; if the genes are allowed to be passed on, you'd be giving positive reinforcement to a trait that no one wants in their grow room! Feminized seeds are made by chemically forcing or stressing female plants, that otherwise wouldn't go hermy under natural low-stress conditions, to produce male flowers. Only those that resist the stress, and are the most challenging to produce male pollen, are used for breeding. Otherwise, the following generations are more likely to be either natural hermies, or highly sensitive to low-stress conditions.
Yes attitude. Reserva Privada OG Kush (actually seen a few times around the site some people having "fem" reserva privada OG Kush seeds turn hermie). The WW is Nirvana.
Those are both respected breeders, so if they're hermies you just got really unlucky. And badkittysmiles said it much better than I did, hopefully (s)he's(I'm still not sure what gender you are?) Right about it being a calyx.
Badkitty- well yeah I agree it's a hassle to pluck seeds out, but honestly it's just for me so I don't mind. I mean if they are from good smoke, better to have seeds to keep it around right? If it has traits from both genetics, it's gonna be a whole hell of a lot more dank than the crap around here! No I haven't dissected one yet. I haven't because I actually kinda want one just for that reason. Say I pluck the nuts off the widow and the kush ends up being a female, I just ruined chances of pollination! Many do not want to grow if there is a chance for hermies but there are like 6 of these things total that I found on the plant. If I find early like I did here, I can pluck em off in the future and still have good smoke without the hassle and money of ordering them
if one is a hermie and one is a female and you breed them, you will have hermie heavy feminized seeds lol... meaning you will likely get females from them with a larger potential for hermies.... if they both hermie, and you breed them expect hermies. However.... White Widow X OG i believe is what makes White Rhino.... and after looking into it i cant find that info lol but if course just breeding the 2 wont produce that strain, it will produce it and a bunch of other phenotypes hahaha but i think what you are seeing is indeed just swollen calyx's but its really hard to tell, the latter one are definitely either swollen calyx's or impregnated ones (which means you got some seeds on the way)
Man I thought I knew a lot about growing until these 2 damn plants haha I've learned so much from them because its my first indoor grow and I've had a few problems. So are you saying it can just produce seeds without a male flower anywhere? Or implying that somewhere I may have had a male flower pollenate my girls? I can ensure that if they are hermie, they have not popped open to allow it to pollenate anything. If what you are saying is it can just randomly produce seeds without being hermie, that's pretty awesome and ill be super happy! I've read it is called "phantom kush" but can't find legit info. No idea what u mean about it producing other phenotypes, but it's because I know very little about genetics. You have just given me a new thing to research!
no, it will never randomly produce seeds... atleast from what ive heard.... from what i see in those pics, you wont get any seeds lol they look like swollen calyx's man also man, seeds arent really a good thing... seeds = less quality product... and its not just because it has seeds in it, its because every bit of energy spend creating seeds is taken away from resin production and growth Especially because the seeds arent going to be stabilized if it was from one plant to the other... from a hermie, they will be as it bred with itself, but if they cross pollinated the variety of different phenotypes you get could make it difficult to grow them in the same area, plus you also have a higher risk of hermie.... Unless you plan on actually breeding lol, then seeds kick ass
Man if they lose 12 times the potency it will be enough for me haha. I was in the Marines for the last 6 years. Just got out in March. What im saying is, I have 6 years of tolerance to build up haha. Seeds or not they will be better than the stuff around here. I'm just trying to help my damn back problems without taking these horrible opiates anymore. This stuff will be more than enough to do it! I hope you are right about swollen calyxs, or at least just one maybe. If I get no seeds I'm going to order some Harlequin and get into breeding because that strain is amazing for pain and hard to find but available now. Up to like 12% CBD!
Its hard to say in the pics from my phones if theres any sacks, but if you get seeds without teying basically dont bother growing them ubless its just for fun. Though some strains like one of the diesels came from a hermy plant pollinating a room, but those genes herm easy. Just cause they are both commercial breeders doesnt mean much, theres plenty od strains bred by commercial people known to herm, as you said you found others sayi.g theirs were herming too. Also, a plant can make seeds without seeing bananas. I had some dairy queens do this just recently cause i pushed them too long. On disecting the already giant calyx' it is clear to see a male flower forming inside the calyx pollinating it from inside, and the seed forming in the middle of the male flower, all even layers. This is a survival tool built in to help ot survive after a season of getting no pollen. This is possible to happen earlier but is pretty uncommon. I think the potency related to seeding depends. The plant makes resin to block uv rays and the elements and other things that may damage the forming seed. I have noticed when seeding plants next to another plant not seeded that the seeded plant seems to get stickier and more trich production. Though there is no real smokeable mass so it may be an illusion or more potency when its a higher concentration of trichs on much less area. Yet another sample to get to the lab for testing to see, lol!
Also White Rhino is White Widow x Afghani landrace from what i know.
Yea that's what I found too, where ever I got og from was probably a different strain hahaha
I had no idea that happens. Pretty awesome, hope I get a few then without turning hermie. The parts that were in question have not yet popped open so no sign of hermie yet. And like I said, if it hermies and I get seeds, especially if it pollenates the other, you better believe I will grow them! It may not be preferred by many people, but I grow for myself and that's it. If I grow another hermie from the seeds it produces, as long as I get some dank bud from them, seeds or not, I'll be happy. Of course that will not be all ill grow, but I'll keep it around. I could always just chop the hermies up to use for green dragon so it doesn't go to waste if smoking is unpleasant.
Anyone hear of "Phantom Kush"? That's what I heard it was called. Never heard of that strain. Maybe it's just a nickname in a certain area or something.
looking at the photos i can see large pre flower calyx's, this is quite normal for some breeds. i do not believe i see any evidence for seeds there santa maria gets the same. they look sunken and deflated, if there was a seed in there they would look fat and firm
