Sooooo the other day me and a neighbor were chatting it up and among the million of things we talked about, civil war and division among our country came up. a few nights ago I read a news article that discussed people in this country wanting division and wanting a civil war in this country. Apparently these nut jobs feel that they have a plan in place to rule the new nation. this morning I read a news article about protestors in Brazil and they marched though the streets holding a huge ‘revolution’ banner So as I see these things happening I start thinking. And wondering about the two. Kind of the same or different? what do y’all think? Is there a difference between the two? it’s weird, some of the things my neighbor said kind of rattled me and I didn’t agree with some of what he said. It may have been upsetting but it is his truth. It is good to know what others around you feel about things. So I am curious what is y’all’s feelings about the current state of your world?

A revolution is an attempt to overthrow a government, a civil war is a war fought between people in the same country...It gets messy when you get into insurgencies and coups d'etat and such since terms overlap.
I think with a civil war you have 2 identifiable factions at war with each other. With a revolution its the citizens vs the government.
Easiest way to think of it...Revolution is an attempt to replace the sitting government, civil war is an ideological war between two or more factions based on arbitrary lines like ethnicity or religion. The civil war in Myanmar has been goin' on since 1948 and has largely been ethnic based between a number of armed groups...The Cuban Revolution was Castro's attempt, and later success at overthrowing Batista in Cuba who came into power after a coup d'etat in 1952.
Does a revolutionary war morph or turn into a civil war the longer it lasts? I'm thinking the longer it goes the more likely the citizens will turn into an identifiable faction as they get more organized.
Don't quote me, but I think almost every revolution becomes a civil war at some point just due to the collapse of the existing government and that push/pull on a local populace that almost always results in a civil war. The Afghan Revolution is a good example of that, since the Afghan Revolution in 1978 Afghanistan has been in varying states of constant civil war which ironically was all brought on by a coup d'etat in 1973.
Not sure if this helps, but when you think about it, the only reason the US Revolutionary war wasn't a civil war was because of a piece of paper. And you could say the Confederacy was fighting a revolutionary war during the US Civil War, but I think that's echoing what @crimsonecho just said.
That is good. I wish I didn’t care about it all For me, it is distracting. But sometimes I need that distraction to get out of my box/bubble/world I am in
So what is it when some of (up to half) the citizens defend the government and are on the government side…is that a civil war then?
Sometimes when u hear the echo, it makes better sense…that’s the part I was thinking about, the us civil war and the differences. Maybe a thread on that subject would help some of the users on this site better understand the history of all that
So true. I was listening to some guy talking about that the other day and and basically who knows what really happened in history. What we know now, is based off of one persons account and perspective of the actual events
Yes...A civil war is a war fought between two or more factions inside a country, it could be argued that during the American Civil War the Confederate States of America enjoyed public favoritism in their respective states. However, just because everyone likes you there, doesn't mean everyone likes you everywhere...But that's a story for another time we find ourselves overthrowing a government for the "greater good."
i still don’t understand the civil war and I find it hard to support either side. It’s like for the civil war, u either support slavery or you did not but it was about state rights and limited government but then again, slavery goes beyond all that, but still…
