What Happens When You Die?

Discussion in 'Philosophy' started by desuforeverlulz, Nov 17, 2011.

  1. This thread is strictly for alternate theories for what the afterlife is. Alternate is defined as: Anything that doesn't include "You go to Heaven or Hell," or "Nothing happens."

Like for example, you know how people see a bright light when they are dying? Well, what if instead of dying, they are actually being born again? The light would be from the vaginal opening as you are being delivered in the hospital... and near-death experiences would be miscarriages. More like this.

  2. being a being of the now we will only know the last thing we knew.

the last thought we have when we die, the life that flashes befor our eyes, or the pretty girl you saw right before being isntantly slaughtered by a falling object.

these thought linger in your eternity and become your afterlife.

    die happy

  3. I think the final firings of the brain would "manifest" whatever afterlife you believe in. Sort of like a dream.

  4. reincarnation, depending on how you lived your life.

  5. you stop asking what happens when you die

  6. Nah, not the depending on how you live your life like if your good or bad crap man , but i agree with you on some level, "matter" cannot be destroyed, so we would maybe over billions years make up a space rock or a planet or a star or even a living thing.

  7. Nothing happens when you die. You cease to exist.

  8. I used to think that your consciousness operated on two levels. One level existed in reality and the other existed on another plane of existence, where physical limitations had no bounds. When you die, your consciousness fully absolves to this alternate reality where you can essentially do whatever you please for the rest of eternity. You can pleasure all of your nerve endings with exciting abstract fantasies like flying across the sky or jumping out of an airplane, or you could create more concrete realities for yourself by imagining it, and this would become "heaven" for you. Say you were truly in love with somebody, and I mean TRULY in love with them, and they passed away before you did. In this state, you can create your own world where the two of you prosper and live your lives just like you would have in reality. It would be wonderful if all of that were true, but, it would also be wonderful if I won the lottery and became a millionaire overnight. It's possible, but it's also anyone's guess as if it would be so.

I agree with this except I feel the "higher level" of consciousness as you might call it is a single omnipresent and universal force that exists EVERYWHERE even outside of the physical realm. And the only reason we experience individuality is because the consciousness is limited to what each biological creature is capable of (because of dna). So when our physical bodies die, nothing really changes. The identities we acquired in this life time are forever gone but the consciousness is still prevailing in it's eternal state and in the minds of creatures throughout the universe.

  10. Oh, right. I agree with that. I think this force is nearly the same as dreaming, or the effects of taking certain relaxing drugs. However, we are constricted by the confines of realities as our bodies are fastened to this reality. We can only enter this world through death. Were this my steadfast belief, I would commit suicide immediately. But I believe that there are other possibilities for the afterlife, and some include some rather grisly realities for those who take their own life. Christians, for example, believe that you get tucked in the little corner of hell right between murderers and blasphemers (see Dante's Inferno). The movie Wristcutters: A Love Story depicts a world where people who have committed suicide live their lives like normal, except much less happy. You can't smile, there are no stars at night, and everyone just seems every miserable and without a sense of humor. I wouldn't want to live in a place like that.

  11. Hahaha yes well I feel privileged to be experiencing reality through the brain of a human! I wouldn't want to go killing myself lolol, we all need to make the best with what we have because it seems to me this consciousness is similar to the Buddhist interpretation of karma, where the more you live a life of bad karma (causing suffering for yourself/others) the more it will inevitably affect "you" because you share the same consciousness with everyone/everything YOU are everything.

  12. I have an alternative theory I've come up with but it's kind of complicated. It's my attempt to bring the soul into the world of physicalism. The idea is that we all experience the same exact sensation, something I've overlysimplified to be the "experience of reality". That sort of inalienable presence within us that fixates us to the moment. Not necessarily the identity, or the "I", but something deeper than that. Just because we don't have the same body or mind, doesn't mean we don't share the same "sensation of experience".

That "sensation of experience" or "experience of reality" or "presence" we all share is what leads us to reach the conclusion "I am" and it's usually described as the soul in religions. So what happens when we die? Nothing. All the thoughts, memories, essence of what we once was disappears. Notice I didn't say forever. What would happen next? Well most likely the same thing that happened to each of us. Right around 3 years old we'll start comprehending our environment and begin forming memories. Those memories will develop into our personalities and we'll reach the same conclusion we all already have "I am".

What does this mean? The idea should make you think of reincarnation. The big difference is that there is NO soul involved, at all. Instead the theory itself adheres to a sort of analytic functionalism and some other big philosophy words that I don't know. Long story short, just as right now is real to you and how you can feel and be in the moment, after you die those experiences will happen again, the only question is, when and where? Who knows? Maybe after you die it will be the experience of my reality. Lets just hope it's not the experience of a reality that ends in pain! or maybe the current experience of reality already will... Get my drift?

  13. I forgot to mention that the sensation of speak of has nothing to do with emotion, or any or any of the senses. And when I mean sensation I'm using it loosely because the sensation itself is still part of the experience. While we can discard things such as emotions, pain, fear, the senses, even the ego ("I"), but we cannot discard this. And it can even be created or recreated! (It's still all physicalism)

  14. I believe when we die, we are given a choice to return to God, or take on the knowledge of good and evil again. Younger souls, ones with more lessons to learn take this knowledge, not yet knowing that they can return to God at any moment.

To me it sort of like reincarnation, I guess, but with some other aspects, no doubt a testament to where I am spiritually.

Someone above me mentioned Dante, in his book Paradisio, he mentioned the levels of heaven. I think this also has something to do with it. Perhaps it is needed, for us to experience all we need to experience to enter higher levels of heaven (perception).

I also really like the Egg story. If you have not read it, I would suggest looking in up. It is a delightful short story that definitely provides some food for thought.

    Good post though, OP! :)

  15. If you have been on treading the path then automatically your conciousness will know where to go ! If your life you where confused , your spirit will be to so after death you will wander but never reach the source where you came from. Your body will decay and become part of the basic elements on earth. Reincarnation is probable to control, only thru mastery of space.

your brain "stops".... so I want believe that you simply stop existing. but at the same time i believe in "ghosts" so... shit if i know. there's so many things we don't know.... i feel that our perception limits us when it comes to things like this....

  17. It seems that humans are always trying to come up with answers to questions like this. I think the very nature of the question in the mind of every human proves that there is something after life. I personally would just like to slip off into non-existance. I didn't create life or after life so I certainly don't have the answer. I pay close attention to how easily deceived people are. All it takes is a seed planted in your brain of what the afterlife will be like and your subconcious mind can make it seem like reality. When we get into the realm of the unknown their is always speculation. I'm just glad that there are people out there that can think for themselves but all that is going on here really is just speculation.

  18. Your spirit is free. That's what happens :)

I read that from thathigh.com :) it blew my mind, I now believe in reincarnation.

  20. I think when you die, you enter a state that's almost exactly like sleeping. That feeling you have when you're half asleep
And you wake up. Not really conscious, but conscious enough for your mind to drift from one subject to another.
