what do you think of the generator idea

  1. Well,

    1. Gas is not cheap anymore, you WILL be paying more to run a generator than using electricity.

    2. Generators are noisy, unless you build a baffle box and exhaust well.

    3. Generators are not a long term solution to power. Many residential models/rv etc, are not made for long term use. A few hours here and there, fine, 18 hours a day, not ok.

    4. People will wonder (assuming you have someone even remotely nearby, driving by etc) why does that place have a generator when the elec is on?

hey guys what do yall think of this generator. idea, just to keep my power bill visually lower. instead of running 1600w , i could run 800 then another 800 with the generator

Dude our whole world depends on a Genny up here as does everybody else on the Mtn.
That said the ONLY generators that will SURVIVE doing what you want...
    Hardy Diesel...any model
    GENERAC 4000EXL

If there is a genny made it has been tested and KILLED up here by someone.
    Your generator must have...
    Replaceable Oil filter
    Good Luck Man

  3. I wouldn't think you'll be raising any eyebrows with 1600 watts of usage, IMO.

I was using 5500-6500 watts a day on 12 hour cycles growing coral for the last 5 years and never had so much as a peep. This was with halides lining the porch in a residential neighborhood. That also doesn't take into account what the household was using each day as well. About $650 a month to the power guys and they were happy to take it. :D

    Peace, OGH

  4. I think you missed my question or interpretation, im not trying to go the cheapest route. im not worried about it costing the same if not more. its about raising a brow at the power company.

you are correct about that, but no where near as noisey as you make them out to be, my neighbor has like a 6 foot tall god knows how many HP generator to run his shop. and i can BARELY hear that thing kick off and on. and it sits outside of his garage on my house side. through the woods . with that small generator sitting in my basement underground i highly doubt it would even be heard by the driveway. and you cant see my house from the road, and the only thing that wonders around my property is a stray dog every now and again.. PLENTY of room. the privacy is the last of my worries, just the power company gettin suspicious.

    I've only been off-grid for 3 years

  7. The power company only cares if you don't pay your bill on time. The power company only helps bust growers who rip off electricity from them, and that happens every day. You would be going through alot for nothing.

  8. ^ I guess that was my point.

Its one thing to want to live off the grid. Something i wish more of us could do, maybe with the lowering prices of wind and solar generation this will be possible.

However, if all you want to do is "not make the elec co. suspicious".... a lot of work for not a big deal. 1600w... thats the wattage of a SMALL air conditioning unit. Or a small dehumidifier.

That's not going to make a diff w/ the electric co at all.

  9. Another possible better solution is solar panels. They are a bit expensive at first, but need no gas, and the gradually pay for themselves anyway.

  10. yeah i agree with ninfan, thanks i was just paranoid
