  1. well i know this guy who just recently started a grow.. but the thing is instead of him going out buying good nutes from the hydro store.. he reads what the active ingredients are and buys the raw ingredients online.. to me this wont work. so what all do you good people think.. what will it come out like. will his nutes work just as good as mine that i bought from the hydro store..

  2. That's essentially what hydroponic farms do. They buy the raw ingredients, buffering agents, etc., and then whip up their own. I'm sure the guys who cater to the mj crowd do the same thing, and mark it up 1000 fold. They put a cute little picture or a hot chick on the bottle to make it seem enticing, and there you go. I doubt a typical closet farmer has enough chemistry knowledge to accomplish this. But when you buy bottled chemical nutes you are paying an extravagant price, not for high quality, but for the knowledge it takes to make it dummy proof.

  3. Come over to the Organics side! That's exactly how we know what's going into our plants, we put it together ourselves!

  4. Unless he is expert plant nutrient chemist, that is nuts.

  5. ya but he just buys what he thinks is what works not all of the buffers agensts and stuff you know.. so i dont see how it would work. maybe a little but i dont think good..

  6. thats exactly what i told him..

  7. thank you GD i am thinking about it just dont know to much about it yet.. i have been reading alot about it on here..

  8. Yea. Unless he has a degree in chemistry, he's going to have some problems. From what you've said, it doesn't sound like he is a trained chemist. From the perspective of a trained chemist (me), this is a bad and potentially dangerous idea. You can't just mix random chemicals together and hope for the best. He could mix something that could not only damage his plants but could also be harmful to him. He could end up with severe chemical burns, or could get something in his eye and go blind. This is a bad, bad idea. Anyone reading this, don't ever do this (unless you are a trained chemist and have access to a lab, in which case you already know that lay people should not randomly mix chemicals.)

Like poppy said, this is the same thing the chemical nutrient companies do (buy the raw chemicals from china). But they have trained chemists in a laboratory doing the mixing. You are paying for the labor and knowledge involved and having their scientists safely formulate those fertilizers.

Once again, the evidence for growing organically is more and more persuasive. We don't have to worry about it because we don't use any potentially dangerous chemicals to grow our plants. Growdank, if you are really interested in growing organically, keep reading and come on over to the organics section. We will be happy to help you get started.
