What did i do wrong with my brownies?

Discussion in 'Cannabis & Weed Edibles: Cooking & Recipes' started by makoe, Dec 12, 2010.

  1. Hey guys. So, me and my friend decided to make brownies for the first time, but they don't seem to work, so i'm hoping you can pinpoint where i went wrong.

We decarboxylated a bit more than a half an ounce in the oven for about 15-20 minutes, and it was all crumbly and dank smelling like it's supposed to be.
Then we melted about a cup and a quarter of butter and added the weed on the lowest the stove would go, and we simmered it for about 20 minutes to half an hour.
After we filtered it, it was all nice and green and wonderful and nice. Actually, here's a picture:

We then added it to a box of brownie mix, and baked it at 325 for about 35 minutes.

We cut them into 20 pieces, which looked a bit small but according to the math there should be just a little less than a gram in each.

They taste okay, but i didn't notice any effects at all. So, can you help me figure out where i went wrong? Thanks guys!

  2. Did you eat them on an empty stomach? You should eat them 30 mins after a meal.

  3. We tried them after eating, and the next day we tried them on empty stomachs, they didn't work either time.

might be way too much oil to half an ounce. So you used equivalent to like 4 grams in your brownies?

  5. Sorry, what? I'm a little confused. we used about 16-18 grams total

  6. Okay you used half an ounce to all that butter right?

Did you use all that butter in the pic, in your brownies?

not enough time, probably at too high a temp. 200-220F for an hour, usually a bit more. Or 245F for about 45 minutes, but this will cause a small amount more of THC to CBN degradation. high CBD content plants also need to be decarboxylated for 20 minuts longer, since CBDa is more resistant to decarboxylation thatn THCa

    Yes to both

Aaaaaaah, i see. But even if it wasn't fully decarboxylated, shouldn't there still be some effects? I didn't think it was an all or nothing affair

  8. all that butter went into the brownies? Well, it's just that the cannabinoids are diluted in the large amount of oil, then diluted into the brownie mix, then diluted into the rest of whatever you ate within 2 hours before and after the edible dose.
Thats why i always say use less butter to bud to keep the cannabinoids concentrated. Did you smoke after eating them? most people get impatient, then they smoke and leave thier baseline and they really have no idea if they felt the effects

  9. We didn't smoke after eating them, we wanted to be sure we would be feeling nothing but the brownies.

Do you think there's any way to salvage them, or should i just chalk it up to a failed experiment?

  10. try eating them again on an empty stomach, as your second meal of the day (basically dont make your edible dose break your fast overnight)

is that pic of the oil after you fried it? Most likely. It looks like you didnt fry enough, and probably tossed tons of cannabinoids out with the "spent plant" material. I can tell because it's barely green, no traces of brownish. You MUST FRY TILL BROWN

next time decarboxylate longer and fry until brown.

    did you simmer the butter?

butter simmers at a temp hotter than thc's vaporizing temp. you could have vaped all the thc away while making the butter if it was simering. the taste doesn't go away when thc does. remember that butter is 20% water and that water will boil at about 200 degrees untill it is gone, then the oil kicks in and goes way past the boiling point of water to simmer itsself. so durring that it will look like it's cooling down so temp increases then it starts again but then it's vaping thc. this is just a guess, the thc didn't just disappear. next time try double boiling it, take two pans of different sizes, one capable of fitting into the other and floating on water, exactly like making melted chocolate for strawberries and fruit. put the butter and cannabis into the smaller pan, then boil some water and set the cannabis butter mixture in the boiling water for upwards of an hour. strain it and use it. i have had great success with this meathod, rave reviews from people who have told me that they gave up on edibles because they didn't ever get high. christmas cookies are everybodys favorite gift around here ;-) i honestly almost gave up on making edibles untill i started using this, it's fool proof, and it works better than any recipe i have ever tried before, i was one of the people who would eat edibles and not get high untill i found this.

  12. plant matter doesn't need to be brown to get all the thc out of it. ive made too many batches of edibles for my dispensary now, i have never seen browned weed unless you used too hot of a temp and lost some of the thc, of course i'm not posting my whole recipe on this site because it's my job as of now, my recipe doesn't smell, anybody could make it in their parents house without them knowing, figure that one out. but i can tell you from experience that any time i made butter where i let the cannabis brown, i was disappointed with my edibles. i have a pint jar full of green thc extracted mmj if you would like a picture, i also have about 37 triple dose cookies in my freezer, i eat only half of one to get gone and i have used less cannabis in my edibles than any recipe on this site does because my recipe doesn't lose thc. i have followed recipes like yours where you get it hot for 5 min, during that 5 min thc is at max absorption rates by the butter but it's also being lost due to heat. slow down your cooking method and be patient, patience has its rewards, use as low of temps as possible and just turn up the time 15-45 min. also i did a second and third flush of my butter and it remained green and delicious but it had absolutely no potency, everything was already in the butter and the cannabis is completely green, explain that.

If you think cannabinoids vaporize out of oil, then thats your problem. If you also think that frying until brown killz teh THCz, thats your paranoia. I'm not going to argue with every single person that thinks low simmer is best, I know there are a lot of people out there. I'm not singling you out at all 1dude1. But just remember, do whatever you want. There are even some users who still ask me the same questions, expecting different answers. Do whatever you want, I'm just letting you know how it is.

SO you believe that the thc is vaporizing out of lipids. Oh and low simmer, leaving the plant green, extracts 100% of the cannabinoids? Are you serious?

  14. One time I just ground my bud into a powder and added that fm the brownie mix n it worked great.. Non of that decarbo-whatever stuff :D

  15. If you want some Bs brownies thats fine.

    Op

use only as much oil or butter as the recipe asks thats so much..so much butter. Also its not dark enough like Paleo said.

Try a higher temp fry with shorter time on stove.

Or ask us before you make them :)
