What are your thoughts about outdoor breeders?

Discussion in 'Growing Organic Marijuana' started by TimJ, Sep 22, 2022.

  1. I'm having a hard time reading about folks that breed outdoors. Can anyone really believe they are the only ones growing outdoors? Do they really believe their genetics could possibly be true crosses of what they are breeding with outdoors?
In my area you would likely have all your breeding plants ripped and possibly be beaten into never doing it again.
I know a grower that has his plants go to seed every year. Some so called breeder, is upwind from his grow.
I do dabble in making some crosses myself. But, would never breed outdoors in respect of my fellow growers. Also because I want to be sure of the genetics in my cross.
So, what are your thoughts on this subject?

  2. Studies were done and in certain places in the world MJ pollen can pulled up into the heat thermals and drift for hundreds of miles.
I think the biggest problems come from the hemp farms

  3. I've read many threads and journals here on GC. It seems folks just don't get it, or just don't care about their fellow growers. Many people grow for medical purposes. Seeded weed cuts their yields and lowers the medicative properties of their crop.

  4. The Leaf of Life doesn't require the Hand of Man. Designer strains are just bragging rights for insecure individuals who lack the insight and skill to tap into the potential all weed is imbued with.

  5. I have no problem with responsible indoor breeding. It's the folks that breed outdoors that bother me. I am fortunate enough to live in an area where we all respect each other and agree not to breed outdoors.

  6. I can assure you that the males don’t last long enough around here to do damage but like mentioned above, there are concerns with hemp being legal even here in SC.

  8. Really hard to control sex of the plants on a commercial outdoor grow.
There is a big market for hemp flower or the buds.
We had a person who knew nothing on growing hemp try to start up farm just outside and up wind of town.
Personally I am super glade he never got it off the ground.
Allot of these people are only into growing weed for the money and can care less about anything else.

  9. I've read an article where hemp growers have outed seed breeders for mislabeled feminized seed. They were shipped regular hemp seed and it ruined their entire season and other local hemp growers as well.. Pollination has the same effect for them. Loss of profits is a big deal to hemp farmers that live on the edge of making a profit from their crops as it is.

  11. It makes for an interesting problem for sure. I’m guessing that hemp farmers (weed too in legal places) have to communicate. And the big commercial indoor places like @Green Dragging had the thread about would be paranoid over some home grower being in their with pollen on their clothes.

  12. I watched a video about an indoor grow operation where they take the steps necessary to minimize possible pollen transfer. They only allowed visitors in the vegetative rooms. But, nothing is 100% foolproof.

  13. Yea I was thinking about a local farm where a friend of mine was doing some contract work and he was talking about washing his tires and wearing coverings as he worked there. I guess it is pretty strict considering what precautions I’ve read here with indoor/outdoor growers taking for home runs.

  14. The official terminology for this type of person is a “Bagseed Betty”. It applies to both irresponsible outdoor pollen chuckers, and people that don’t have the common sense to pull their males. There should be a “Don’t be a Bag Seed Betty” campaign, paid for with legal Cannabis Tax dollars that are slated for education purposes.
    Cheers

  15. Responsible breeding outdoors is very possible. Isolate the male in a clear plastic tent / shed / Clean room. Collect Pollen. Clean female bud sites of fans and small sugar leafs. Paint pollen on prepared bud sites with tiny art brush. Tag to make it easy to find at harvest. 50 or so seeds per thumb sized bud. I've done it for years. Would I let a male go to full bloom uncontrolled outside??? AKKKKKKK NO !!

Any number of males can be used per female with this technique. I have yet to find a single seed this run. I almost always get a few when trimming.

  17. When reached for comment, Sen Lindsey Graham stated - "If i had my way, it would be illegal to pull males as God intended all pollination" "I'd like to speak further on the matter but I have a golf date"

  18. I agree and should have been more clear. I was speaking of those using open pollination with fully blooming males.

  19. Seems like folks should know by now pollen travels by wind, birds, clothes, even insects. If I was breeding I'd prefer a indoor tent isolated possibly in another building entirely. I would hate to be that guy who's unintentionally or intentionally pollinating others outdoor crops. Outdoor is hard enough with animals, thieves and pests, molds. Especially those who need it for medical reasons.

  20. The grower that gets seeded every year lives downwind from a trailer park. So, we'd guess someone in the park doesn't realize what they're doing. I set the grower up with auto flowers this spring so hopefully he gets one good crop.
