What an idiot - pay more attention!!

  1. Well, i thought all was going well with my grow - this is week four and two of my seedlings made it and were looking really good...

Then I started to see some brown spots on the leaves and they weren't looking too good...

Thanks to these and other forums I looked to find out what the answer was (no doubt somebody would have the same problem, I thought) - yep, there it was, exactly the same symptoms... and the reason... nute burn.

But on the basis that I've added no real nutes ("seedlings don't need nutes for the first four weeks") other than a dilute wash of seaweed extract, I couldn't figure out what it was.

SOIL!!! - I remember reading that the compost must be nutirent-free, so when I checked the bag guess what? It's got nutes in it!!!!!! Aaarghhhh!! What an idiot!!

So I've re-potted, taken off as much of the 'bad' soil without trying to cause too much damage or disress to the nicely forming roots, and re-potted with a loam-based compost (with small amount of John Innes added). I've also added some water-retaining crystals.

Here's how they look afterwards -

So, the moral of the tale - read the bloody forums and PAY ATTENTION!!!

Please everyone, say a little prayer for my girls, help them recover from their Dad's stupidity!!

  2. ...well, the good news is the girls are looking good, in fact they actually look quite 'refreshed' for their move to new soil and space. When I took them out of the previous pots the roots were growing out the bottom and they clearly needed more room to stretch their legs!!

I've also clipped off the bottom leaves on Leggy Blonde (as I now call her), with new buds showing at the leaf nodes I'm hoping she'll react well and just keep on growing.

They look much tidier in their new homes and are already starting to smell (hummm, nice!!!).

Next problem: I water almost daily and yesterday put a small hydrometer in the closet to check humity, it's dry!!! Is this really bad news? How much moisture should these babies be getting???

    :p

  3. I tried to use Quench wich is a water retaining crystal and it almost killed off my babies, they were about to die anyways so I carefully checked out the roots and ewven a pinch of quench swelled up so much with watter that it caused root rot.

I washed off the roots and set them in some distilled watter with double strenght supper thrive for an hour and replanted them carefully and crossed my fingers. even put them outside in the sun for 2 weeks and watered them very sparingly. To my suprise a little over a week later the have started new green growth, but I still consider them in critical condition.

    Be careful with that stuff!
