What all can you do with a cannabis plant

Discussion in 'Apprentice Marijuana Consumption' started by Zilfana, Nov 26, 2011.

  1. Me and my fiance are about to start a very small grow, mainly just for our own personal consumption, and we really want to get our mileage out of these plants.
I want to be like the Indians and buffalo with this shit. Let no part be wasted. Obviously we are going to smoke the bud, but is there anything else you can do with the plant. We might try to use the clippings to make hash, but I've even heard something about boiling the stems and making cool-aid or something.

I wouldn't even rule out things like making hemp rope or something, although I'm sure I would need some kind of machinery to do that :D

  3. Well hemp is incredibly useful, there are literally 100s of things you can make....

whether or not you can is something else entirely. Not because i dont think you're capable, but more-so because im not sure what entails processing hemp to be made truly useful.

You can use the stalk and seeds as well as the flower, although if youre growing for the bud (flower) then you wont be getting seeds. that being said if one of your plants turns out to be male, save it so you can harvest the seeds and stalk.

What CAN'T you do with a cannabis plant!

The roots are used as a heart medicine-

Stems, just as stems, can be stakes for next year's veggie garden, pipe stems, solid stems can be made into chop sticks, kindling for the wood stove, compost if nothing else!

Fiber- You need to soak the stems in water for weeks to break down the softer cells. this is called retting (comes from the same root word as "rot"). Old way was to tie the stems in a bundle and dump it in a pond over winter, come spring, you haul it out and "hackle" it to separate the fibers. You can make a hackle by driving nails in a board. You flail the fibers over the hackle and pull them through like hair through a comb. From there you can make string to rope.

Run a search for industrial uses of hemp. Mind-blowingly versatile, a perfect homestead crop!! :D And you can make ethanol from the hemp hurds (what falls to the floor as you hackle your hemp.).

The seeds? Most folks don't realize that the hemp seed is a great source of Omega 3 which is very low in the American-style diet! (This is KILLING US! Leaves you open to cancer, and more!) Hemp seed is also very digestible, yummy and nutritious!

The seed is about 30% oil (corn is 3%) and this oil can be eaten, or used as a lubricant, as a cosmetic base, in paints and more! The oil can be turned into bio-diesel. There are hand-powered oil presses that will make small amounts of oil- saw it on youtube. :)

  7. Take all of your clippings, leaves, stems, and literally every piece of the plant left over, and chop it up very finely (like in the video) then freeze it. You can make hash from it, which is really what most growers do with the leftover plant material.

This is the best method I've seen:

  8. A lot of really good ideas Storm Crow, but unfortunately I don't think i'll be growing on a large enough a scale to do any of these. I may be able to make a small amount of hemp, but probably not. It might be useful to explain that I'll be growing low ryder in a staggered grow pattern so we always have weed. Also they are feminized so there would be no seeds :(

  9. I will probably try to make hash though if there are enough clippings!

  10. I think storm was posting that stuff just to give you an idea of whats truly possible with the amazing cannabis plant. Realistically, you're not going to be doing that stuff with a small grow, so do what I suggested and just get some hash from each of your plants.

I'd say you need at least two "left over" plants to make some hash, it might not be a whole lot but it should be enough.
