What age is too young to get high?

Discussion in 'General' started by AHuman, Jan 18, 2010.

  1. So I was stoned and thinking "Fuck, I first toked up at 15... and I don't regret it for a minute!". Thinking of this, I went on to think "In a legalised, regulated market, what would the most appropriate minimum age to buy weed be?" and "What age would be the cutoff point for me to think that the person is too young to be getting high?"

Now, I'd think that most people on here want weed legalised. I also know that the model for its legalisation would likely follow that of alcohol and tobacco - the minimum legal age to purchase it being somewhere between 18 - 21, with government regulations and such applying stringently. Personally, I (and I'd estimate most people) would have doubt that ANY state or country would legally sell it to anyone younger than 18, but what I ask is this; if we all completely ignored reality and what 'would happen' if it were legalised, what age would you feel comfortable with?

    I'm sure it's occurred to you, but consider;

. What age you first toked up at, and whether you regret starting at that age/if it has done you any kind of damage.

. In your associations, friendships etc, have you noted any kind of correlation with starting smoking weed young with 'failure'? Or perhaps success? I know it's subjective, but that's why I've asked us all to somewhat suspend our political rationality for the while and purely to draw upon our collaborative knowledge and experiences to discuss the topic :D

. How young is too young? How young would someone have to be for you to consider them 'too young' to smoke, and why?

. Whatever the hell else you want to consider, I'm out of ideas :smoking:

Once again, this isn't any kind of practical, realistic debate where we can bring all bring out our statistics, big words and arts of political persuasion. So momentarily suspend your belief in reality, think about what age you first toked up at and what you've noticed with other peoples cannabis use, and give some opinions on what age you would feel comfortable with people toking up at.

  2. you're either too young to smoke weed or too old to be still smoking weed. always.

  3. I have friends that started when they were 8...
But i think 16 is the youngest

  4. I'd say 19 should be the legal age to purchase marijuana, as well as alcohol. I dont have a problem with 18 year olds smoking, but if you allow 18 year olds to buy bud, large quantities of high school Sr's will be buying for underclassmen. If you make it 19, it really only becomes available to college freshmen.

  5. Fucking oath, wise words quoted here!

It depends on region to region I suppose; here, weed being sold to 18 year old youths doesn't matter to much, as at 18 you're out of school. But I can go with the bloke saying 19 on account of the whole 'sales to schoolkids' thing. Ideally, I say that whenever the kid is ready for it - but realistically, I'd say 16, 18, something like that :smoking:

  6. 25%+ of the people in grade 12 are 19.

  7. I would say the 13-14 area.

  8. If you can walk, you can smoke weed.

Age limits destroy our liberty, our ability to make decisions for ourselves. It allows the government to parent us, when they are not our parents.

  9. as soon as they pop out of that vagina, a child should be consuming large quantities of marijuana in food!! :yummy: ....

  10. Hell no. I started when I was 13.
I think you should be at least 15.

and I look at her like: :smoking:

Oh and, I think about 12 is an alright age to have expierenced some herb. why not? not like smoking everyday, just occasionally. Nothing wrong with that, fucking braincells.
You have 'opening' and 'ristrictive' substances, I believe if herb is used "responsibly" that its an opener.
So yes, if I had a kid, and they were curious, I would let them take a hit whenever they asked for it, wether theyre 6 or 16.
Just be sure to be a responsible parent, but that just doesnt mean u have to ristrict them and BE strict.. just be consequent.

  12. i think 16 is good. it would still be very easy for younger kids get weed, so it's not like i think this is the age you should first be able to smoke at. but i do think 16 is the lowest age for someone to be able to buy weed.

  13. 18.

Thing is, if you start smoking it when you're very young, it screws up the chemistry of the brain. I think it stops when you get to 21. But that's a bit too old IMO.

  14. 15 is a good age. This was my first time. I think 12-13 is WAY too young. Sure I know guys that started smoking that young, but I mean at that age I was watching Saturday morning cartoons. Now that I think about it, I still do. I'm contradicting myself, I shall stop now.
    :smoke:

  15. I started sparking it when I was 14 , I turned out fine.
    Well ...

  16. I think it depends on the person. I would say on a large scale 18 years old and if anything was possible 16, because that's when I started

  17. youngest 16-17 no sooner, responsibility and not recklessness.

  18. I agree, once its in school, it's in school.

I'd personally say 18. If your old enough to go to battle and die for your country, to go to jail, to buy cigs, to vote, you should be able to get drunk and high, your an adult at age 18.

I started a month before I turned 16 and I wish I woulda started later, my reason being at 16 alot of kids don't really have any responsibilities besides school, and with no responsibilities it's easy to get carried away with doing dumb shit, like mad drugs. If your introduced to altered states later when "the real world" comes into play, you take things a bit more serious, but of course, if you got an addictive personality, it's gonna happen no matter what.
