Wet Roots

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by BBTheory, May 13, 2014.

  1. Ok, I have no doubt this has been asked many times, but I have not stumbled across a post on this question.

With soil growing, one is concerned with the under and over watering of the plants.
under watering is obvious on why that is a problem
overwatering, from what I understand rots the roots and/or prevents them from breathing (poor little root lungs)

So, why doesn't the roots rot when in DWC hydroponics growing where the lower part of the roots are constantly in water?

fill and drain hydroponics makes sense that the roots would not drown, and the drip if on a timer such that it is not 24/7 running on the roots makes sense, but it seems like roots can stay wet all the time in hydroponics....... why the do roots not rot in this scenario, when they are so easily damaged in soil?

sorry if this is a stupid post. just trying to figure out if I want to dabble in hydroponics

Dwc contains airstones that continually aerate the water so oxygen can be absorbed into the roots.

  3. And for what it's worth root rot is definitely a concern in dwc.

Adequate air supply and a sterile or beneficial environment is key among other things.

  4. Also res temps under 75* to prevent root rot. Personally I keep mine at a cool 68.

  5. Tons of air and low res temps like everyone says. Root rot is a terrible thing in dwc. And people are always battling it
