Watering frequency for cocotek coir?

Discussion in 'Coco Coir' started by Poindexterous, Dec 23, 2010.

  1. My method has been top feed recirculating hydro into 2 gallon pots for a long time now. Been using 100% perlite as my medium for most of that time. I'm gonna give coir a try now to see how it does, and am not sure if I should treat it any different than perlite as far as volume and frequency of waterings?

I bought some GH Cocotek "mixed" bricks to try alone or mix with perlite.

Will this coir hold less or more water than perlite?

How often to top feed? Hourly? Daily? Can plants drown in this coir or will it always drain quickly?

    Any advice much appreciated, thanks!

From what I read in a hydro book, coco coir responds best with a run to waste system and given frequent low volume waterings(several times a day). MrED in his thread up top said it responds well to drip watering. I believe recycling may not work as well due to sodium/potassium buildup in the system as the coco breaks down.

  3. i run the same cocotek brick. i mix it with perlite and hydroton. right now i water my veg like every 3 days (little chilly in there/winter) and my flower every 2. love my results.
