Found a new item at the store and am wondering if anybody has used it for their curing. It's a small (2x4") resealable plastic bag labeled "water pillow" and it's intended use is as a humidifier. Inside the plastic bag sits another smaller blue plastic permeable square. Directions on it state to: dip contents in distilled water for 15-20 seconds; replace contents back into the plastic bag; then place plastic bag in with cigars, pipe tobacco or roll-your-own (it is supposed to keep cigars and loose tobacco fresh for 60-90 days). You think it will work for curing (especially if i include a "taste-sweetener" with it)?
It might not work for curing but maybe for keeping your stash tasting fresh and not all dried out for a longer time. Normally cigars etc. are already cured. This sounds like a substitute for a humidor. I was reading yesterday about some things they have now that are used to absorb moisture from plant material. It is used in the process of drying seeds and grains to keep for a long time. Apparently mold requires a certain percentage of moisture to grow as well as oxygen. They mentioned a method to use for preserving grains in 5 gal. buckets with no mold growth. I plan to try it on some MJ soon. I will be harvesting this week and will be trying this method soon. I will keep you posted on the outcome. If it works I will be starting a thread, probably in this topic.
The pillows you refer to are primarily marketed by the cigar and pipe tobacco industry. They maintain a RH of ~70% inside a semi-sealed enclosure. Before I got a rather elaborate set up for my humidor (6ftx3ftx3ft) I used them in my travel humidors. Now I use a combination of an active humidifier and humidity beads that keep a constant RH of 65%. Oddly enough (if you can believe it) I keep my stash in there too.
oh and BTW, 60-90 days is a stretch, but they're reusable for a really long time. Just recharge them with a little DW and you're good to go again.
Didn't mean to "veg" out on the subject Been trying to read up on how to use sweeteners. I got it now...I can use the product, but after the end of the harvest and as a preservative (humidor) measure - will definitely have to experiment with this. My 4th week flowering appreciates your input
I haven't tried it yet. perhaps this weekend would be a good time to try it. I finally harvested and I do have some bud still drying. Some of the bud is on the edge of molding too. might make a good test. Thanks for reminding me
