War in Ukraine

  1. Did you just read the headline or did you read the article? Russia's government has enacted very stringent capital controls (socialisty/governmenty/communisty stuff) on its currency precisely because it is so weak. In other words, you cannot directly exchange it for foreign currency, so there isn't an accurate accounting of its strength versus other currencies. In the open market, where currencies can be freely traded, the world's strongest currency is the Kuwaiti Dinar.

  2. The Kuwaiti Dinar has lost value vs. the USD since Jan 1st. The ruble has made significant gains during this same period - outperforming any other currency.

    • “The ruble has actually gotten so strong that Russia’s central bank is actively taking measures to try to weaken it, fearing this will make the country’s exports less competitive.”

  3. I know what the article I linked says.

If Russia prevents you from buying foreign currency with rubles, as they've done, then you cannot accurately measure it's strength in the open market. All you can say is that they are experiencing currency deflation.

  4. Economy Minister Robert Habeck told Bloomberg that the turbine for the Nord Stream 1 pipeline needs to be returned before maintenance work begins on Monday. Releasing the component would remove an excuse for Russian President Vladimir Putin to keep the conduit closed.

“I’ll be the first one who will fight for a further strong EU sanction package, but strong sanctions means it must hurt and harm Russia and Putin more than it does our economy,” Habeck said in a phone interview late Wednesday. “Therefore, I ask for understanding that we have to take this turbine excuse away from Putin.”

Germany is facing the prospect of rationing energy in the coming months, which could hit businesses and consumers and drag Europe’s largest economy into recession. Officials have warned that Russia could shut Nord Stream long term after the two-week maintenance period on Russia’s biggest gas link to Europe. Flows were already slashed by 60% in June over the turbine issue, hampering Germany’s efforts to store sufficient supplies for the winter.

  5. Russia has been easing capital controls since April as well as their interest rate. Russian citizens are allowed to exchange rubles for all foreign currency except the USD and Euro for the past 6 weeks.

  17. German reporter Alina Lipp faces criminal charges and three years imprisonment because she reported on the situation in the Donbas region, where she sympathized with Russia. Currently living in Donetsk, Lipp saw her bank account frozen and raided for €1.600 without further explanation. German authorities say that she may not defend herself in court as that may thwart the investigation.

Graham Phillips, 43, from Nottingham, has been criticised for pro-Putin coverage of the war in Ukraine.

He was accused of war crimes after videoing captured Briton Aiden Aslin, and describing him as a "mercenary" rather than a prisoner of war.

Officials said Mr Phillip's assets had been frozen as his media content helped "destabilise Ukraine".
