Want to source organic ethanol for tincture!

  1. Hey All! I'll be harvesting in a couple weeks and I need to find a source for 200 proof USDA Certified Organic ethyl alcohol to make a tincture.
Why 200 proof? I'm assuming the higher the proof, the longer it will remain preserved. Correct me if I'm wrong - I'm here to learn!
Why organic? Well, I'm growing organic, so I figured I may as well stick with the theme.
I'll settle for a lower proof [190 at lowest] and non organic if need be, but I've seen it around [my old employer used to use it - pretty sure it was 100%], so I know it's out there...
So does anyone know of any good [preferably inexpensive] sources of small amounts of ethanol?

Also - I've never medicated with a tincture. What's the average onset time? And what are the body / cerebral effects more reminiscent of - smoking or eating [butter / cream]?

I'm prepared to submit proof of business and whatever other hoops I'll need to jump through to get some.

    Thanks for your help!

  2. Sorry but this seems completely pointless. I can understand wanting high proof although 120 proof or higher should keep for just as long because 60% alcohol or higher acts as an antiseptic. Nothing's going to survive in that high of alcohol concentration. Organic just seems unneccessary in everyway. In fact I've never heard of "organic alcohol." Ethanol is ethanol and water is water. Get some everclear 190 and be on your way. In some states 190 isn't legal so settle for everclear 151.

  3. 190 ever clear is the highest i seen. i dont think 200 proof is for oral consumpsation

  4. That's true because it may contain traces of benzene. Benzene = nasty stuff.

  5. I was thinking it might start degrading at a lower proof because of the higher water concentration and the tendency for microorganisms to breed in water, but I guess at anything higher than 60% the water would be so saturated with alcohol that nothing really stands a chance - is that kind of the gist of it?
And yes, organic is completely unnecessary when it comes to alcohol [everything inorganic is long since dead], but I'd like to get my hands on some nonetheless [it does exist, an old employer of mine used to source USDA certified organic ethanol for making organic chocolates - when you have an organic product, all sourced ingredients must be organic] - in my town, organic goes a long way when it comes to consumables.
But good points. I'll probably settle for Everclear for the time being, although I would like to get my hands on some pure ethanol for future adventures.

  6. I just checked on that - looks like, in general, 192 proof is the highest I'll find that hasn't been distilled azeotropically. Good lookin' out - I like to know the reasons why things are the way they are.

  7. yeah 190 off the shelf, 192 for consumption period. btw, straight it'll make u blind.. and whats worse about 195-200, it'll absorb atmospheric water, until its... 190 proof. plus benzene. not good.
