Want to grow for the first time

    FYI, once it starts flowering, it will smell a lot, depending on strain but Kush will probably stink up the place.

    You need:
    lighting (CFL - cheapest, or HID - HPS or MH)
    ventilation + odor control (Fans or blowers needed for fresh CO to plant/to remove heat and a carbon filter for odor control)
    soil (potting soil)
    nutrients (many choices)
    extras (timer, light sockets or ballast, pH meter, thermometer/hygrometer)

    That was actually going to be another question :p

    But she lives on her own. Parents own the house and she pays rent.

    well i would start you build just will basic stuff, lights, fans, soil. then grow from there
