Want my mother to live a healthy lifestyle...tips?

  1. So my mother seems to be in a bad spot in life. She had two hip replacements done a couple years ago and just never got it back together. She's on disability (I think she needs to go get herself a job, but she doesn't have the drive to) and doesn't eat the healthiest... 

    She's 55 and weighs in at 240lbs. Little to no exercise, and watches tv most of the day and sleeps most of the night. Goes to bed around 9 and gets up around 9. 

    I've tried to encourage her to take walks and eat different foods, cut back on the salt and pepper and whatever I can help with. But it doesn't seem to do anything....


    Anyone have any good websites that cna help her out or any food and/or workout suggestions? 

    Maybe a routine someone can come up with for my mother? 

    She smokes cigs too, but has really cut back on them....or at least I think she's cutting back..

  2. She needs to be in a caloric deficit to lose fat, she will lose weight no matter what she eats, as long as she is in a caloric deficit.
    Tell her that.
     
  3. I think the big question is: Does she want to get healthier?
    It's her choice, and I understand your concern. This is a decision she has to make, you just have to remind her that her unhealthy lifestyle isn't hurting only herself. You need o be straight-forward and honest as to why you want to see her change for the better. 
    If she can't respect the care you have for her overall well-being, then that's a problem of hers that should NOT be yours as well.
    Let her know you can help her take small steps toward self-improvement. It's her choice to accept the help or not.

  5. why are you cutting down on pepper?
     
    replace all salt with unprocessed Himalayan salt, for example.
     
    does she buy all the food? if so you need to try and make sure she buys healthy stuff.. if not, then just get rid of all the crap and buy raw, natural food. 
    learn how to cook and make great, simple meals with quality ingredients. 
     
    as far as workout.. how about just walking 2-3 miles each day to start with? yoga? zumba? (anything to get moving). there's no specific gym routine or conditioning workout needed for someone with that life style. not for the first 3 months, until they become mentally and physically ready for the next step.
     
    but as poster above me said, if she doesn't make a choice to get healthier on her own it will be very tough. 
     
  6. She always tells me and my grandmother how she's going to lose weight and get back down to her old self (140) but she'll start her diet that she uses and after a few weeks of loosing weight she stops. Idk why she stops but that's it.

    my grandmother is the one who provides all the food. My mom does buy food aswell, especially when she's on her specific diet. I keep telling her I'm here to help, but not in the best of manners. I could be a little more of a motivational figure than I currently am. We don't have the best mom and son relationship.
    I try and get her to go on walks with me. But its only around the block with about 10 houses on the block. And she has to take a break halfway sometimes to catch her breath. I have had asthma since birth and just this year my grandmother, mother, and sister, have been diagnosed with asthma.

    I'm not familiar with the diet she is used to sticking with but I know it involves healthy foods. I guess all I can do is continue talking to her and keeping her hopes up. I need to get in good shape aswell so hopefully I can be the man and man up and have us all take steps to becoming and living a healthier lifestyle.

    how do you keep your grandmothers daughter from sucking out every last dollar your grandmother has to her name in order to pay for her rent food transportation and pretty much her entire life?
