I recently purchased a volcano and upon testing it I do not think it is getting as hot as it should. I have a IR heat gun and I have cranked my unit up to 9 and let it sit until the control light goes out then I take my temp readings. Since I am not sure where I should be taking these readings I have tried all over the place. The hottest part I can find without opening the unit up and voiding the warranty is right around the rim just under where the filling chamber connects. I get a reading of 270 to 280 F which not close to the 400+ F the unit is rated for. I have let the unit sit for 30+ min on the highest setting and 285 is the max temp I get. I asked a friend of mine who had a volcano and he said if he were to vape some herb on the max settings he would get a bag of smoke but since he no longer has his volcano i can not test his with my IR gun while he is going to stop over in the next few days when he gets a chance to take a look at it with me I thought i would turn to the forums for more info. When I set mine on 9 I do get some vapor but the bag for the most part is clear and is far from being a bag of smoke. While i realizeI am looking to vaporize the herb not smoke it I also want to make sure my $500 purchase is working as advertised. Most of the vids I have watched show people using the 6.5 setting to vape their herb and at 7 ish the bag is pretty cloudy. Can any one tell me where I should be testing the temp at on the volcano?
Have you tried using it or are you just heat testing it? I've never had a heat gun to test mine but I don't think the outside should.be as hot as the inside anyway. I think you should try it on 6 or 7 and see if vaporizes the weed.
I have tried it I do get some vapor but I am not able to control how much I get the same amount on 5 as I do on 9. I think my temps are not getting to where they should be but I do not know where to should be testing at. I have shot my IR temp gun all over the outside of the vape and through the hole in the top of the volcano at every possible location and angle I could and the hottest temp I have found is 280 ish and that seems to be right under the lip where the filling chamber connects. If I crank the unit up to 9 and turn the air on I can place my hand over the volcano almost touching it and the air is warm but i do not think it is close to being 400 F which I am assuming would feel pretty hot being that close.
There are alot of variables you need to control. I vape at about 5.5 for my first bag, and the grind is super fine, the weed is green, and there is probably .1g in there. I get a decently thick bag of vapor. However, if I cranked it up to 7 for the first bag of fresh weed, I'd get a way heavier bag, but I wouldn't be able to vape it again after that. Just try it on 5.5 first, and see what happens
