Virus Scanner help

  1. Hey guys well my computer seems to have a virus on it. I was just wondering what would be the best program to get for it. I used AVG and it just seemed to mess my computer up even more. So if u have a GOOD anti virus program lemme know so I can look into it.

  2. AVG is one of the best...it should have been installed before you did anything on the internet.

Installing AV software AFTER you get a virus is a no win thing...best to repartition and format for a clean install.;)

ps; stay away from anything from Symantec (aka Norton), it DOES F-up a pc...

  3. AVG use to be dope, but now it's just a piece of shit. Try Microsoft Essentials?

  4. Avast is good, and they have a fully functional free version.

Though, if already infected, your best bet is to wipe the OS partition clean and reinstall Windows and other apps/games. And do so from original media and/or trusted download-sites that service original content releases (read: no pirate-sites/torrents of cracked apps/games). Oh, and do install anti-virus before you even think of hooking the PC up to the net.

If reinstalling everything seems like a bit too much work, and it is certainly something I loathe to do, you could try:

1: Downloading, installing and updating Avast Free
2: Boot into safe-mode as admin
3: Run a full scan with Avast

It may or may not fix your problem.

Whilst you're at it you might as well also download Spybot Search & Destroy and CrapCleaner, and use those apps to do some extra cleaning after the virus check.

  5. I disagree, the newest version of AVG (2011) is total crap. I use Microsoft Security Essentials. Best free antivirus program I have found

  6. Well right now I am using the virus scanner that came with Windows 7. It has found a couple of stuff but my computer is acting weird.

I also have a problem with the internet. Sometimes the internet will go out and I will have to disable the local area connection and than run the windows troubleshoot thing just to get the internet running again.

  7. i use avg free (2011) and havent had any problems with it. also have malywarebytes anti malware and spybot search and destroy. you should download ccleaner. it clears all cookies history and just cleans up unused and useless files off your comp i just run it every night before i go to sleep.

  8. All those corporate made scanners are crap. I use COMODO Internet Security Premium for all my needs.

  9. Anything know what could be causing my connection problems. It seems like everytime I shut down the computer my network card craps out and dosent connect. I know how to fix it temporary. All I gotta do is go in and disable the local area connection than run the troubleshoot. This just started happening the other day. Before that I had a somewhat similar problem where my Local area adapter or w/e it is called craps out and dosent work. That was fixed with windows troubleshoot. With the current problem tho I can't just do troubleshoot I HAVE to disable the local area connection before I can run the troubleshoot or it wont pick up any problems.

  10. Totally agree, I used to use AVG for a long while(mainly cause my parents used it and i just got used to it, plus it was free) but then it just started turning to crap, then i used sophos anti virus for while(my school offers it for students, i believe its paid software though) and that was pretty good, however a few months ago I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials, and haven't had any problems with it and seems pretty good, for the most part I can keep my computer pretty clean just by being cautious with what i download/open etc, but i have gotten the occasional thing that its detected and removed without a problem. Another nice thing is whenever it finds something that it doesn't recognize you can send it in to them and it will add it to its virus vault or whatever it uses to detect viruses.

As for the network card issue, have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for it? not sure if thats whats causing the issue, but worth a shot.
(before you uninstall the driver make sure you either already downloaded the driver file you need online, or have another computer you can download it on and then copy it over on a flash drive or something)

    Hope this helps.

  11. As others have said, AVG used to be good as a free product, but in the shadow of Microsoft creating a completely flawless, free antivirus, now it's just shit. Get Microsoft Security Essentials, seriously. Word of advice, though: DO NOT go with "no-name" antivirus providers. Antivirus is not a kind of software to be played with by no-name "closet coders". Antivirus requires around-the-clock staffing of dedicated testers and researchers to find and report the latest malware mutations, and maintain an up-to-date definitions file that everyone using their software downloads. So there's really no room for lil' old mom-and-pop startup companies to create a reputable AV product. And I'm sure a lot of butthurt wannabe antivirus companies are helping contribute to the malware problem by creating their own "so-called security" malware (spyware doctor, zonealarm, etc).

And no, you don't need any "firewall software". Firewall software and "internet security suites" are total ripoff scams. A firewall is built into Windows that is more than sufficient to protect against all external "hacks". What you do on your own computer is up to you, and that's where good antivirus comes into play. But a firewall is just a nuisance that causes problems with all sorts of software. Stay away from "internet security" products.

I would suggest Malwarebytes. You can get a free version which isn't watered down or scan only from their website: Malwarebytes 95% of the features on the bought version can be used on the free version.

It's saved me from some pretty nasty malware that I thought was going to have to take a reforemat to fix.

  13. Just downloaded that same software. So far, so good

  14. Anti viruses don't really help that much for the stuff now

    RootRepeal
    Gmer

    Icesword

    Go google it.

And if you want a good wipe of your drive. use dariks boot and nuke. Dod short method for a good wipe or a quick. Still better than windows reformat.

  15. What's wrong with your connection?

Is it that it says limited connectivity?
Have you tried pinging a IP not a domain so see if its a dns issue?
Have you run ipconfg to see if your dhcp server is giving you your details correctly?

Have you uninstalled your adaptor and reinstalled it(fixes a lot of issues)?

This doesn't have to be a virus!

  16. oh shit wtf? This is odd.

Let me explain what recently started happening to my pc...vista basic

So after it comes out of sleep mode it decides to get no fucking connection at all, THIS NEVER USED TO HAPPEN. 2 and a half months new pc.

    i use a cable modem

Now it magically decides to not connect anymore after sleep, I HAVE CHANGED NOTHING OR DID ANYTHING NOR INSTALL ANYTHING...or use any type of security programs since i visit some basic sites and that's it

So to fix it i had to plug out the modem, turn off the pc, Replug the damn modem, wait 2 mins for all the lights to start and start the pc

AND THEN I GET A CONNECTION

Wtf is this some sort of conspiracy?

Im not even fucking around it's pissing me off...A solution for me would be disable sleep mode but i need to conserve energy

WTF is going on, im not the only one now...it was driving me fucking crazy

You really think that's a virus? Dude, that's a driver thing. Probably got some shit auto-updated driver from Windows Update* and it fucks with your sleep. Sleep is a really complicated matter, do you ever notice how it actually turns off your computer but somehow manages to come back up almost instantly? Takes a friggin' orchestra of driver cooperation to get everything to come back up properly, in the right order.

Grab a proper driver update for your ethernet chipset, done and done.

    * - most Windows Update drivers are good, and the best place to get drivers, but I've had bad luck with ethernet drivers. Still got an update pending on my quad-core desktop at home which, if I apply it, it'll kill my ethernet adapter with "device cannot start". Smooth driver there, MS...

  18. Well I dunno whats going on with it. I get connection if I start up in safe mode with networking but if I start windows normally I don't get a connection. I have ran multiple virus scans even if safe mode and nothing was found. I even updated the driver for the network card or w/e and still nothing. I can't figure it out >.<
