Virginia Beach Ghani Origin???

Seeing as this is my first post I suppose I should say a little about myself... I was born and raised in VA Beach, and have since moved on to Colorado where I have obtained my medical license (along with everyone else in the state it seems). Over my many years of smoking, I have been privileged to blah blah blah... Enough about me.

To get to the point. I am here to hopefully obtain information (or maybe spread some) about a very certain and localized strain of weed (a shot in the dark, I know). The stain is called Ghani (short for Afghanistan). I grew up around the beach, and around that area Ghani is known as the strain of strains. A smoke almost to good to be true. But its origin has always been one that is shrouded in mystery!

To start, the bud is absolutely the best I have ever had. There is a part of me that wants to believe that my undying love for Ghani is just a bit of high school nostalgia. However, after many years of sampling the supposed "finest and purest of strains" from many dispensaries around Colorado (and CA), I have still found no bud that compares to the 757 Ghani. That is not to say that I have not found anything better, or more pungent. It is just that I have found no other stain that Smells/Tastes/Looks like Virginia Beach Ghani still to this date.

You could almost consider my "need" to find the origins of this strain an obsession. And it has lead me to many many different stories of origin, all of them claiming to be the "real deal". I'm talking outlandish stories.

I once had a drunken conversation with a man in a bar that told me someone in his family had snuck the strain over from somewhere in Asia, to Hawaii sometime in the late 80's. The strain was "stabilized" in Hawaii for "many years" until the breeder moved east to Virginia Beach, this move involved smuggling multiple seeds "inside someones vagina" to their final destination in VA Beach... Crazy I know, but almost to crazy to be a lie.

Another tale involved the strain "originating in the 90's" from some type of pure afghan plant, and that at allegedly was called Spade.

Yet another more simple tale is that it was a particularly fine OG Kush cut that made its way to Virginia Beach in the 90's.

This is but a few of the usually strange stories I have been told about the origins of the Ghani.

One thing remains certain about this plant though, and that was that it was the real deal. It is known around the state (the world for that matter). It seemed rather stable (pheno seemed to be dialed for the most part), and that it was always amazing. It seemed to be fairly common around my area also. I recall finding a bag of it in my friends moms closet, and remarking that we had the exact same weed. I learnt a few years later, that bag had been purchased from someone in Norfolk, seemingly worlds apart from my humble hook up here at the beach.

The bottom line is that I want answers! I want the What/When/Where/Why of this particular strain!!!

P.S. I have seen a lot of cuts around the past few years that are obviously poor bagseed grows from ghani sacks, or just less potent phenotypes than what I call the "original ghani". It seems that the original (OG) Ghani from my highschool days ('03-'07) is not around anymore, and that is just a crying shame! I think that this particular strain/pheno is on par with the best in the world, and needs/deserves recognition from the worldwide canibus community!!!

  2. i have a friend who lives in va beach but hes never mentioned anything about that particular strain he s always telling me about more popular and widely known strains such as kush ect. hope you one day find that strain you like so much op. i live in Ky and theres a strain that involved breeding the best ky phenoes with another strain from cali. its called http://forum.grasscity.com/stash-jar/953098-herojuana-6-3g-nug.html Herojuana - WeedYard.com - The Largest Medical Marijuana Strain Guide its become quite famous also check it out if ya want op.

  3. honestly every area has that nostalgic bud, i've never heard of ghani but in 703 Agent Orange used to be what everyone talked about when it came around. In parts of maryland people would talk about Maples and fantasize about it. Its important to realize that more often than not the bud was completely different

Honestly it is probably just 1 good local grower who chopped his plant and flooded the market for weeks at a time and then its all gone. This happens in almost every city/town/county. Also you have to keep in mind that maybe when you were younger down in the 757 you didn't smoke as much quantity or as often, or maybe you are just very used to feeling high that you don't even notice it as much.

  4. Ghani sounds pretty good... but Ghandi sounds amazing haha
Ghandi (Mel Topps) | "Honest and Accurate"

We have this strain in Montana called Silvertip (GDP x SSH)
"The same brothers that brought the Bozeman Kush also brought the SilverTip Medical Marijuana Strain. An entire crop of Grand Daddy Purple Medical Marijuana strain had 3 seeds that were accidentally crossed with someone's Super Silver Haze Medical marijuana strain pollen. Out of the three seeds one was male and the other didn't take, the last one became the Montana dispensary wonder child, SilverTip. It was named after one of the brother's encounter with a mama grizzly, so that is another story. The SilverTip Medical Marijuana Strain has been one of the highest testing plants to my knowledge in THC in Montana. It has a similar flavor to Purps, just much more limey with a much bigger kick. SilverTip Medical Marijuana Strain is one of our brightest MT strains."

And here is some of the silvertip i have had in my smoking career.

  5. @ Trazyfilth... Thats funny you mention that strain because one of the more more believable stories I have heard about the origin of the "VB Ghani" is that it was bread in the mountains of eastern kentucky/tenesse...

My search for strains similar to Ghani, has always brought me back to one strain, HOG. Which apparently stands for Herijuana Original Genetics, and was bread in the kentucky/tenesse area. I've only sampled HOG one time, and I will say that it comes very close to Ghani. Looks just like it, only thing lacking is the smell and taste (I've always described the smell and taste of ghani to be of pink lemonade).

So, one of my theories is that its a fine HOG, that was selectively bread in VA Beach for amazing taste and smell...

Just a theory... If anyone has anything else to chime in on, I am very very interested!!!

  6. in vb ghani just means afghan i seen people call afghan, goo, and random weed ALL ghani. sometimes its amazing tho

  7. I can't tell you where ghani originated, but I can tell you it's been in the Norfolk Virginia Beach area since at least the late 80's. I first came across it in 1989 and I know people who had been growing it for a couple years before that.

For a long time it was a very popular strand in this area, but as more strains were brought in and more people got into growing around here ghani kind of got pushed aside for new flavors, It is however still around. I know of at least half a dozen people who still have the original strain going, although most of them are very small grows that are primarily shared between friends.

I've been smoking since the mid 70's and in all my time getting high and all the different strains I've tried, ghani is definitely one of the very best. One hit and the whole world tastes like your standing in a pine forest in the spring. It's one of those weeds that if you do 2 hits you're ready to veg in front of the tv for 2 or 3 hours, 3 hits and it's time for a nap.

I'm not sure if this will work here or not, but if so here are some ghani plants 3 and a half weeks into the bud stage 3 1/2 weeks on Twitpic I'll go get some more pics just before they get harvested
