VG Tincture evaporation help

Discussion in 'Cannabis & Weed Edibles: Cooking & Recipes' started by kartkid, Mar 21, 2014.

  1. I've been researching VG Tinctures for the past month+ and I finally decided that I had filled my head with all the right knowledge that there was to know about making VG Tinctures[in crockpots specifically].

I just finished my first run here and my final product only yielded about 2-4mL.
    I started with
30mL (1oz.) Food Grade Kosher 100% Veg Glycerin
4 grams from my stash      [I started with 3.5g but bumped it to 4 for higher concentration/potency]

1- had my fine bud in a pint Mason Jar with 30mL VG
2-kept in crockpot for 8 hours on WARM which topped off at about 150 F [infrared TempGun]
2b- during the 8-hours, I shook up some but nothing crazy, because of the small amount in the Jar.
3-at the end I folded cheesecloth twice-over mason jar (3 layers of cheesecloth, yup 3) and help the jar upside down, over my funnels.

*I found that the VG was NOT draining so I quickly thew it in my potato ricer and POW...

    only 2-4mL :/

Please, any help would really help!
I've read multiple guides so chances are if you've written one you'll see where I maybe combined to or more guides in the wrong way.

    Any help is much appreciated!

  2. Hey man I'm liking how much research you did :) id recommend decarbing the weed first, and presoaking your cheesecloth in your solvent before straining. Otherwise I fear those 3 layers absorbed all your previous vg and now it's gonna be hard to get out. Id say in the future just use the potato ricer cause with coconut oil Atleast, cheesecloth is really coarse and messy.

Maybe microwave that cheesecloth and throw it in the potato ricer and get that stuff out. I've done lots of research on the ricers too after my first cheesecloth run so if you like it then by all means use it

how do I change my signature

  3. Soak the cheese cloth in the VG? Wouldn't that lower potency/concentration?
Otherwise that's definitely a great idea.

I did decarb but I'm afraid I didn't do it for long though. (30mins @225ish)
I want to retry with 60 mins @[member="240"].

    Thoughts? :0

Thanks a million for the help btw!!

You dampen the cheesecloth with the solvent you're using to prevent the absorption of the infused version. With the cloth already wet,
your product won't be drawn up into the dry weave, giving you a larger yield. If you have 190 proof alcohol, soak your saturated cheesecloth in a couple of ounces of it, squeeze it out real well and evaporate off the alcohol. You should be able to recover a bit more. Otherwise, soak your cloth in some koolaid or other beverage until the glycerin dissolves, then use that for dosing. If you reclaim the glycerin with alcohol, you might as well pour the squeezed reefer in there, too, and get out the glycerin and THC left behind. When you strain it, wet your cloth with some alcohol.

I use a ricer, too, and highly recommend them.  :)

  5. Damn I can't believe I missed the soaking step :(

I may try the kool aid thing though! It makes sense. Any idea how long to soak for?

Until it dissolves, shouldn't take too long. Work the fabric a bit to get out as much as you can. It will work better if the liquid isn't cold. This will reclaim your glycerin but the potency will still be dependent on your original extraction process.  :)

  7. Thanks for the idea! I tested it out to no avail. :(
Either my trichomes in the VG were/are not active or there aren't many in there to start with!

Via crockPot and using only flowers, does the coloration of this look similar to "ideal"?

Also, I'm about to re-DeCarb my 1/8Oz from this go + my 1/4Oz from a previous butter run
    [ButterBud~ about 33%-40% THC left].

Does this sound like a bad idea?
My hopes are to use the semi-spent 3/8 Oz to make a SUCCESSFUL batch of THC Active VG.
    [about 3 fl oz worth]

I've been thinking this over and I'm hoping you can lend me your thoughts :p.

That coloring does look appropriate but that's all I can say.

You really didn't have a good ratio the last time and glycerin needs some sitting time for it to fully bond so I'm not really surprised by the outcome but live and learn. You can't decarb after you've already used it. You can possibly do some freeze/thaw cycles but otherwise not a good idea. You could possibly add both leftovers together and make more butter but you wouldn't get a good VG by using the butter leftovers. It's a lipid and won't mix into the glycerin. It's not a bad idea to reuse leftovers but it's best to keep them separate.    :)

Lesson being learned :), thanks man for all the help.
Oh and what is the right ratio?
    I used: 1/8 Oz : 1/8 Cup VG

Any advice on changes I should make are more than appreciated!

Just bottomed up my cheesecloth-VG iced tea. Let's see how this goes.

Your ratio isn't too bad. 1-3g/oz of VG is the norm, which you had, but you also had issues you've learned from. Next time don't use cheesecloth but instead use some mesh like silkscreen or a mesh coffee filter or a ricer. But mesh is best for glycerin. When it's finished, put it away in a dark warm spot for 2 weeks. It takes about that long for the extracted THC to fully absorb. At that time it's ready to go and I would start your dosage with 2 ml.

Have you ever thought about a Green Dragon tincture? I know a bit about that stuff, glycerin is just a sideline.  :)

  11. Hmm now that recipe I'll probably be trying this week/weekend.
I've wanted to try to do a green dragon tincture but I can't get my hands on 191 in my state :( it's harder than the green. I've managed once but that was before I smoked ;)

If you think it's that much more with it... Please advise me :). I just have to wait until I get my VG tincture diem right so I can vape and drop it :D
That's currently my short term goal. I've already grasped butter making, BHO or cold extract is next.

It's 50 times better than glycerin, even with 151, which you should be able to get. It's not quite as good as 190 if using bud but you can make a dynamite product using hash or kief. It's really easy and doesn't need a lot of effort. Here's the guide:  151 Kief/Hash Tincture.. :)
