vermicomposting for next year

Discussion in 'Gardening' started by Nate04, Aug 22, 2012.

  1. I'm starting a worm compost today so I will have plenty of free worm castings for next springs garden. I only have a handful of worms so I need them to breed in a small container before I start a big bin.

Any tips would be appreciated since this will be my first compost and next spring will be first garden.

  2. Howdy Nate,

Welcome to GC:wave: I think you might get a lot more help if you had me move this thread to the organics forum but meanwhile, here are a couple of threads in that section that have a lot of information on worm wrangling:

    http://forum.grasscity.com/organic-growing/334921-vermicomposting-make-your-own-worm-castings.html

    http://forum.grasscity.com/organic-growing/916171-vermicompost-production-bins.html

If nothing else, pose your question in the first thread I linked and you'll for sure get some diverse information from several growers here that raise their own worms/vermicompost.

1 tip I learned from Wetdog that may help you is to put 2"x2" squares of corrugated cardboard in your bedding. The worms like to lay their cocoons in the "tunnels" and the cardboard eventually breaks down.

    Again, welcome....
