Venting into hot-water heaters exhaust??

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by Mr. Farmer, Feb 3, 2011.

  1. So, I am working on stepping up in the world from a closet grow to a small room and am having a problem finding a stealthy way to get rid of my exhaust.

What do you think about tying the exhaust ducting into the propane-fired, hot water heater's exhaust? It's a rigid pipe coming out of the tank and elbows over into a chimney.

Would a back draft preventer be enough to keep the propane fumes from seeping into the grow room? Or maybe I don't even have to worry about fumes.....

  2. It isn't safe and illegal in most states.

If you have to, run a pipe inside the pipe.

I didn't tell ya this one, but I know of growers tapping into the vent pipe off the toilet  and/or sink plumbing.

Goes straight to and through the roof.

  3. Cervantes actually explains how to do this in one of his books... says it makes the vent pipe smell better... released pre 09.... guess its not a new idea... i'd have to imagine if the line backed up, this could be a bad idea..... but, never know till you try i guess

  4. Very dangerous to vent to the water heater exhaust. You risk your grow ventilation dominating the passageway and preventing carbon monoxide and other deadly gases from escaping, so instead they could seep back into your house.

  5. Alright, thanks guys. Definitely not going to risk my family's health. Back to the drawing board.....
