Hi all, I am looking at venting into a chimeny. We have a log burner which has a soot hatch in the garage (where the growing will take place). What i am wondering is whether i can modify the soot hatch so i can vent into the chimeny. Has anybody else come accross this before? Or know if it will cause any problems with condensation etc. it will be double filtered so should not cause any smell issues.
I actually own a chimney company. I would not recommend venting into a flue that has soot in it... If you want to use the hot water heater/gas furnace flue that wouldnt be too bad considering its just gas....but the soot from the log burner flue isnt that healthy....i wouldnt recommend it.
Thanks for your reply mate. I was could get a new soot hatch door fabricated which would just attatch to the ducting. When you say the soot is not healthy, do you mean that you think it will get into the ducting. I was concerned about the heat from the log burner effecting it but was thinking this will be shooting up the chimeny, past where the soot hatch is. I will see if i can sort a picture out as i am not very good at explaining it.
I don't know about the soot problem but Jorge Cervante's recommends It because It's a good place to exhale heat and When It is put into the air It's so high It's less likely to smell the odor.
Yeah, thats what i was hoping. Venting high out of a chimeny will help disapate the odour ( if there is any after filtering)
Here are a few pics of the soot hatch in the garage. The circular section inside is the flu from the log burner.
do you see all the black thats coating the bricks....and the dust everywhere..... even with a fan theres a chance that particles can come back in I would recommend calling a chimney guy and having them cleaning it out (steel brushes) and vacumming the whole thing out....after that...as long as you have a strong enough fan you should be good
Yeah, i see what you mean matey. So if i get it swept and had a new soot door made, do you think it will work? I was going to have a door made with a 90 degree bend on the outside to nopefully reduce the chances of the soot getting in the ducting and near the fans.
soot or dust or whatever getting in the cent. fan could also ruin the fan.. you probably want a filter installed some how between thet cent. fan and vent out
I've heard theres issues with extracting air into a chimney, I would check for those air vents around the house first. The last thing you want is chronic smell lingering all around your place!
Im geussing you are working out of your basement? Do you have a washing machine and dryer down there too?
I am working in the arage which is attached to the house. The chimeny in question is air tight until the pot on the roof so i should be ok smell wise. I will have a think how i can filter it inline, thats not a bad idea just need to work out how. If i can get this to work it will improve security massively. I was planning on building a filtered box above a top opening window round the back of the house. I used to do this at my last place and it did work well but if i can avoid it, it will help reduce odour and noise leaks aswell as reducing questions.
I suppose i could stick a filter on the end of the ducting, build a box round this and then send a pipe the to cheminey from this. This way it will be double filtered too. I could also use a one way ducting valve thing so that it closes off the pipe when the fans are not running. I will try and draw a diagram to make it clearer. I appreciate everyones advise.
