Ventilation and Light Question-Closet CFL

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by Cap-N-Krunch, Nov 24, 2006.

  1. Hey guys, been reading a LOT over the last few months and I appreciate all the time and effort you guys have put in to this kind of project. I have a bathroom closet with 3'x3'x8' dimensions. I've built a shelf halfway up so the top can have flowering plants and the bottom can have veg.

The door generally stays closed and I put a 50 cfm bathroom vent in the ceiling in the closet. I'm sure that's not enough, but lemme finish my setup then I'll ask questions.

    Bottom, veg section has:
    -4x65w 6500k 3200 lumens CFLS
-1x55w 2700k 3500 lumens CFL (numbers seem wierd, but that's what's on the box)
-4x26w 6500k 1600 lumens CFLS on the side
-2x23w 5000k 1600 lumens CFLS on the side

I think that's enough light for the bottom veg area, what do you guys think? Approx 26,000 lumens of CFL light for a 3'x3'x3.5' area.

Now the flowering area is not as neat. I have:
    -4x40w 3000k 2600 lumens CFLS
    -5x55w 2700k 3500 lumens CFLS

Total lumens in the top is 27,900 lumens.

Temp in the flowering section (top 4' of the closet) is 98 degress Farenheit by mid day. Humidity is around 25-30%. Those numbers are horrible!

Right now, I have 1 female bag seeder in the top about 2' tall and kinda shitty looking and 6 babies in the bottom. Here's my concerns. The babies are growing nicely, I've started LST and the nodes are uberclose. I don't know how I'm going to be able to keep up with that growth in the top part with my current light setup. I think I can do it with only one plant in the top so there's enough light. Am I crazy? Should I be able to get two or three in the top with those lamps? I feel like I have to position all of them around this plant to keep it from looking puny.

So, I'm guessing I need more light to do some serious growing. Now, the other part of my problem, which is obviously hidnering growth....ventilation. I have a 6" desk fan at the bottom of the veg section by the bottom crack under the door. I have a couple of computer fans blowing upwards in the veg section, the top of a 20" oscillating fan (not oscillating) near the top of the flowering section and then my 50cfm bathroom vent venting exhaust to the attic. I can leave the door open when I'm home (brings the temp down to 84), but since they're on different light cycles, that will not work when I'm out of town. Would a 150 CFM bathroom exhaust pull enough air to bring my temps down? Should I look into getting a humidifier or worry about lowering my temps and that may raise the humidity?

Sorry for the long post, I'm just trying to give you guys as much info on my setup as I can. This is my cherry popper, so I know it's going to be messy and someone will probably cry, but the next one will be better

Thanks for your help guys, I need ventilation suggestions and do I have enough lights in the flower section for more than one plant? Right now, I'm thinking no, especially with how hard you guys push HPS. Thanks!

  2. Take the door off and put tapestry over it to disguise it. It will vent the room

  3. You're right those numbers are funky...but I'd say you should be able to do 2 or 3 plants with those flowering lights. I wouldn't bother with a humidifier, just get the temps down. 50cfm is puny, I'm sure upgrading it would help.

  4. I'm thinking of pulling the 50 cfm bathroom vent and mounting a 500cfm in-line duct blower. I figure I can just run 8" tubing to my attic and tape off excess gap in my square hole I cut in the ceiling. I would hope 500 cfm would be enough pull to keep the room cool. I'm leaving the door open during the day and it's around 89 in top part.

The old lady vetoed door removal, I kinda figured...I think I'm going to try and install that fan this weekend. You think that would get my temps down?

Thanks on the numbers Kamel, I'll let you guys know what my temps are after install.

  5. Hey man. You have a nice set-up.
Growth stops at 90 degrees... so, get those temps down!
You've got just as many lumens as HID... i think your set with lighting.. maybe take some CFL's from the veg area and put them in the flowering area...

  6. 51 plus watts a square foot is great for growing some bud..... but even with the cfl's you are using you are going to battle heat unless you get some serious fans in there.....

i have 6 - 26 watt daylight cfl's in a slightly smaller grow space and it gets hot.... lots of fans..lol

  7. I have the same kinda problems with being in a closet and having high temps. i didnt start growing yet, cuz i want everything to be perfect. The temp issue is the last thing that i have to take care of be4 i start growing.

post some pics of your set up so we can get a better idea of how you could cool down the closet.

  8. Alright, 1st time posting pix, hope they come out okay. I installed an 8" 500 cfm duct blower where my bathroom vent was in the ceiling. Temps are down, but we got hit with a monstrous cold front, so our place is mid 60's inside, which naturally brings my grow room down. When temps go back up, I'll post inside temps, but they are mid 70's right now.

As you can see, in the top half (flowering section), I have all my lights on the lone plant. Is that too much light? Stems are turning dark red with the lights on them all the time. Buds are starting to show up, yay! Overall, my plants have a light green/yellow color to them. All I have added is blood meal to the vegging plants and bone meal to the flowering plants. Could the yellow/green color be Mg deficiency? All help is greatly appreciated!

  9. your setup is nice, you have the right idea, BUT. your doing too much in such little space. i was scratching my head reading your question thinking '' with just cfls his temp shouldnt be so high, with the ventilation you had''

but after seeing that pic i understand why, your plants are damn near right on the light. you need more height than that,

each one of your growing cubicles is small. no room for good ventilation, just trapped heat and stale air.

id personally take one of those chambers and build a seperate cabinet just for vegging. and use that new space , for my other activities.

just my 2 pennies, but i hope it may , help you. or at least make you think.

  10. Yeah that is a cool setup, it's good that you surround the plant with light like that. As long as you can handle the heat, that plant should flower nicely. Looks a little cramped for more than 1 good sized plant up there though. The yellowing I could see looked more like nitrogen def to me. Easy to fix and not a big deal in flowering, you want em to get deficient in the end.

  11. Okay, I removed some plants from the bottom and repotted the remainders into 3 gallon containers. I also raised the light level up so it's about 8-10" off the plants now. I took a closeup of the best looking one. See how yellowish it looks? They were in waaaay too small of pots and were rootbound. I'm assuming that's the major cause of the yellowing. You think it could be N deficiency also?

Also, my stems are reddish...you can really see it in the flowering plant (last pic), but all my vegged ones are or are becoming red as well. All but the very bottom of the flowering one is red. Do you think having the lights that close may have caused it or do I have a nutrient deficiency perhaps caused by too close of lights?

What else? I added 1/3 cup of bone meal (1-11-00) granules to the top when I put her into flowering (11/18) and again on 11/27. I can't really tell any difference in the plant. Is that a good amount? The directions on the bag are worthless.

My airflow problem is better for now with the drop in outside temps. The 500 cfm blower and boxfan help too. I can keep the door closed and it stays around 84 in there all day (Not that I've been keeping it closed). I don't know that I can get the "okay" to spread this little project out beyond the closet. Assuming I can keep the temps down and keep that boxfan on 'em w/ the door open. You think They'll get enough air to flower one plant and only veg maybe two?
