Using cannabis for PTSD/anxiety alleviation?

Discussion in 'Medical Marijuana Usage and Applications' started by luckythatway, Nov 10, 2007.

  1. I'm victim of a violent crime and would want to try using cannabis for PTSD/anxiety alleviation. I've tried everything else, yoga, meditation, biofeedback and now need to give cannabis a try.

My most pressing question is: what strains give the best physical effects with little "head" effect? I am not interested in getting high or incapacitated at all but I can tolerate some moderate level of head effects if I must. If I could find a strain that relaxes the body but gives no head "high" that would be ideal. I'm determined to give this a try so recommendations for a strain that comes close to that quality is appreciated.

I know that a pure Indica is supposed to give more body stone and less head high that pure Sativa but I'm wondering if there's maybe a hybrid that fits the indication more closely. For instance "Afghani" is a pure Indica but is described as "Very strong, physical, practically narcotic high." That sounds like maybe too much physical high. All I need to do is relax.

I will be purchasing seeds to grow illegally indoors. Hard to what forum to post to so I tried this one first. If anyone has a URL link that might be helpful in my research I would be grateful for that too.

    Thank you,
    Richard

  2. if your not looking to be knocked out than I say get a Sativa 75% Indica 25% combo, something like strawberry cough. Also most purple strains (sputnik, purple 1) are a nice 50/50 ratio and are sorta a toned down high.

I would personally keep meditating though. it might take years to get to the point where you control your anxiety, but its a really effective way of dealing with stresses of all kinds. Hell, why not a bit of both. Weed increases your alpha brainwave activity, so theoretically that would make meditation and understanding a lot easier to achieve.

    good luck man

  3. Hello,

Although in some of the states, this condition is not a qualifier for authorization, it has helped me quite a bit. Since I am a patient, there are many other reasons I use it, but the calming effect for the PTSD is a side benefit.

What I recommend is that you don't smoke or vaporize, but eat. There are many recipies and ideas out there. Cookies seem to work the best for me. It gives me a strong body buzz but leaves my head alone. Zippy pot is what I call it and you can find that by mixing a few strains together to make the butter. 70/30 or 60/40, Sativa being the prodominant ingrediant. The effects last for 8-9 hours and does not disappear if you happen to eat something. I have lost 45 pounds and lowered my chloresterol back to normal by using medical marijuana.

After working in a clinic for a year, I have learned many things. Holding a dying patient in your arms and be able to give him something that brings his appetite back; or watching an MS patient take their first steps after 4 years of wheel chair bound; and even knowing the kind of pain some of these people are in; taught me to believe in this medicine. I do not drink, smoke or use any other illegal drugs for recreational purposes in any way. Everyone in the home knows to stay away from my medical marijuana and they have learned to respect it just as they would a bottle of traditional medication.:hello:

The tradional docs put me on Morphine twice a day, Oxycodone 3 times a day, Fentanyl, Visteral and a few others. I can completely cut these out by doing two small things. 1. Go to a hot dry climate and 2. Eating a cookie a day. Pretty much gives me a life back. The alternative is laying in bed all day suffering and crying.

    Good Luck

  4. Couldn't the dr just give a recommendation under the fact that ptsd is under the umbrella of anxiety disorders?
Hence being a type of anxiety?

    Worth a try I think.

  5. I can't say about Canadian law, but in the State of California, if you have been diagnosed for PTSD, and can produce records of this diagnosis, in many cases you can be verified by a specialist in Cannabis Recommendations to recieve your certificate of medical necessity. Cannabis specialists do not make primary diagnoses, they will conduct an interview and sometimes a physical, to determine if the primary diagnosis is qualifying for cannabis therapy, for PTSD you'll need your psych or family medical records faxed to them, or you can bring them in yourself. If your in California, anyway, sorry I know that doesn't help you in El Norte.

  6. I wish it was that simple. The PTSD is an addition to actual real medical issues. I was ill before the main event and continue to be after. I was raped at night by a criminal that also shot my friend to death. He actually broke into my apartment.

I have demylenation in my brain. I have tumors all over my body and most likely not caused by the PTSD. Also, the car hitting me and blowing my back out while pregnant might have contributed.

Being strong is a quality that has gotten me this far, however, even the strong have a weak spot.....chronic long term pain. UGH

  7. PTSD is not even a qualifier in our state. A doctor won't even write it.

PTSD is a mental disorder that cannibis really doesn't offer a lot of relief to. Yes, it makes you feel good and I guess that does relieve the symptoms, but medically they don't have enough proof that it is effective enough. Also, MJ is actually a depressent and can in some cases make depression and PTSD much worse.

  8. My heart goes out to you more than you will ever realize. I have been there and still fight the ghosts every now and then.

Couseling helped me more than anything. Once I got the proper counseling, I was able to move on much better.

Cannabis does help (in the short term) but it can make you worse. It seems that Cannabis has not been all that successful in the mental health area. However, every single person is different and I'm not a doctor.

  9. In my honest opinion, I would not recommend cannabis for PTSD. I think that the high amplifies your underlying anxieties and make your condition even worse. Plenty of stories people have shared here: http://www.erowid.org/experiences/subs/exp_Cannabis.shtml

Cannabis is great for other things but not at treating anxiety disorders. But, everyone is different. Getting high is different to everyone because not everyone's minds are exactly alike.

  10. I'm not sure what kind of anxiety I have but it's pretty extreme. I can't breath, sometimes I can't eat, if it's really bad I throw up, and most of the time I can't sleep. I slept 3 hours night before last and now it's 6am and I'm yet to get any sleep tonight. I think relief of anxiety can be found in the right strain. I have had MJ that literally cleared it 100% made me laugh and smile and let me sleep... and I've had just the opposite as well but it really depends. Find something that works for you and stick to it. Good Luck!

  11. Anxiety and PTSD are not qualifiers in Washington State. I do not know what the qualifires in the other states.

But, yes, you would be absolutely correct if that does qualify. Check blackle and find out.

    Good Luck

  12. :hello:
This is why it was taken off the qualifier list because it is dicey. MMJ is a depressent and therefor make conditions of the nervous and mental systems worse sometimes in some patients. CHECK WITH A DOCTOR IN YOUR STATE FIRST

It works for me, but I'm battling pain that is out of control and I seem to be ok. But, I watch for signs of problems.

    Great Post, rep to ya:hello:
