Using both the sun and artificial light?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by madmax3, Oct 11, 2011.

  1. I live near the equator so the most sunlight I would get in a day is around 12 hours, the area I've put the plants in however don't get so much direct sunlight as I'm not growing in an open field or anything.

So I was wondering, would it be possible to use both artificial light and sunlight? Not at the same time however, just during the time when the plants don't get any direct sunlight. Which for me seems to be in the morning and evening. Stress could cause problems but I reckon if timed right it should be ok?

  2. you shouldn't risk it. sunlight is good for mj, but the stress you can cause by switching back and forth can cause male flowers.

  3. No like thatguy said it's not worth the risk, there's a reason why cannabis grown indoors has a strict light cycle, if you do this you will get a hermy.

  4. 12 hours of direct sunlight is more than enough! I sometimes grow plants outdoors and where I live I rarely get more than 3 hours direct sunlight, and some days I don't get any at all. From late September onwards I don't usually get any direct sunlight at all.

  5. Ahaha, I meant for the whole day there are 12 hours of sunlight or day time rather. Due to the place where my plants are planted I only have a time window of about 2 hours of possible direct sunlight and there won't always be direct sunlight in that window due to clouds moving and whatnot. I am however, going to try and put them in a place where they'll get more sunlight.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

  6. i have four plants turning into compost from moving plants in and out... dont recommend it :D lol

  7. Oh okay! Well are you trying to stop them from flowering? If you planted them at the right time they should be fine to flower now.

If you're growing outdoors you should just let flowering begin naturally.

  8. They're showing signs of sex now, I just feel that if I had more sunlight during vegetative growth they might have been slightly larger. I think near the equator it doesn't really matter when you plant them, it's pretty much summer here all year except for maybe a month of two of slight rain.

It's only just been a month I reckon and they're already showing signs of sex and I don't think they're autoflowers either. Does this seem too early or is it natural anyway?

  9. There's a difference in sexing and flowering. Sex will show when they mature, and doesn't necessarily mean they're flowering.

They will begin to flower whenever they have about 12 hours of total darkness. So if they're flowering it's perfectly normal.

  10. i have a similar question, im growing on my window sill, where my plants get about 4-5 hours of afternoon sun. to hpoefuuly increase my yield i set up a couple of cfl lights aswell, is this a fine way to increase light? the plant doesnt get moved around or anything...
