US Rap or UK Grime?

Discussion in 'Music genres, Bands and Artists' started by blueberyum, Jan 29, 2012.

  1. I know most people on this site are from the us but have you ever listened to UK grime?? I personally prefer it to any modern us rap because it has a much dirtier street feel to it, and when grime rappers do well they don't make shitty trap hip hop songs but keep making sick music. What are your opinions??

  2. I'm from the uk.
    Got the new lord of the mics?

    Not yet, looks tight tho

  4. I'm going to check out this genre recommended me some underground grime cats .

  5. When I hear grime I think nasty annoying dubstep music. I know there are some pretty good European rappers though mostly they just seem more intelligent than most.

  7. Stuff like this?

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToZUIdbgqjE]Lowkey & Faith SFX - Alphabet Assassin - YouTube[/ame]

    [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuL0_mZ_QSc]Menteroja "Ho-Chi Minh Style" - YouTube[/ame]

    I can dig it.

  8. I listen to at best 4 US artists, the rest is grime all the way.

    Generally speaking the very least you're going to get when you listen to grime is reflective lyrics, rather than fairy tales. So that's good. Beats are generally much darker too, leading to more atmospheric tunes.

  9. Fuck that man trap music is like the new folk music burr burr burr burr

  10. Its got to be grime, the Uk scenes blowing up. I stopped listening to US rap a while ago, got pretty weak and everyone was putting out the same shit

    Bhaha one of the funniest statements I've heard on GC

    One of the advantages of grime is that it changes very quickly. So at one period it was all sampling, then at another it has a lot of wobble bass. For some sampled stuff check out akala's early work, skinnyman...
    Also if you're interested in European rap in general I would recommend 1995, a rap crew from France. They are making it big there with old school sounds. I'm on iPhone app so can't post links but check out:
    Monsieur Sable - Alpha Wann & Nekfeu
    La Source - 1995
    Du sexe opposé - Alpha Wann & Nekfeu

  13. I like both but listen to more US hip hop. Admittedly mostly stuff from the 'golden era' but there are still plenty of less mainstream producers and rappers who are still going strong in my opinion. Obviously some have burnt out a little and/or are just milking it for the money but a lot of them weren't too great to begin with!

  14. I'm a massive fan of some US artists even though I'm a Londoner.

    I was into grime back in the day... The days of:

    OK, Lowkey is new, but you get me.

    Lowkey isn't a grime artist. Grime is dead now although people are still continuing to make music, the grime scene is dead no questions about it. when we talk about grime im talking about 140bpm, alot of people on this topic are confused about what grime is. The underground scene in the uk is now rap/hip hop.

    Akala doesn't do grime anymore either he's a rapper and every artist makes rap/hip hop music.

    Yeah a lot of the originals have moved. For example P Money used to be one of the hardest going but now he just does shit voice overs on dubstep songs like bass cannon.

  17. you can't compare 500million people to 50million people. obviously america is better, they have a much bigger talent pool to choose from.

    however, since we are comparing uk ain't got shit on america in terms of lyricism. originality, maybe. i haven't heard anything as mad as next hype by tempa t in my fucking life.

    i'm from the UK btw so this ain't no bias shit. but for real though the only truly decent lyricist that i can think of off of the top of my head that could hold a candle to anybody in the US is wiley.

  18. We have like 30 mil to your 500 mil and we still kick your ass at hockey all the time.

  20. UK Grime N-E-DAY. UK as a country, seems to be very musically in-tune. The best music ( in most genres ) comes from the UK.
