hi since power fails are frequent in the place i live id like to get some advice on setting up a UPS to give backup to two 600 watts lamps. thanks
Unless your willing to pay in the thousands or more a UPS wont do it. UPS's are mostly sold as to allow a user to shut down there computer properly. Most of the ones that people have there computers hooked to provide about 10 min of power. Back up genie would be the ticket.
No it wouldn't, that's what Rhapsody was telling you, unless you get an industrial unit that costs thousands you won't be running a 600w lamp (plus fans etc) for an hour on a UPS.
whats ups? i have thought about putting a couple of solar panels on my roof to lower my leccy bill and provide power during outtages.
Uninterruptible power supply - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia what if i get a unit for each lamp of 600 watts only that works for 15 min in case of small power fails. or inst that a big deal if lights go off and on for short periods of time like 5-10min ?
I really don't know how long a UPS could run a 600w lamp (and fans, remember that if the lamp is running then you still will need heat removal). Seems like a big investment for just a few minutes of power. Depends how long your power outages are -- if you have any for more than a few minutes then the UPS didn't do anything for you but delay the inevitable. Basically you are spending considerable money for the UPS units on the bet that you will have a power outage of only a few minutes or less. What about a gas-powered backup generator? It wouldn't maintain the lights at the moment the power goes out but does give you power for as long as you can keep it full of gas.
If you're willing to spend the money for a few UPS units, why not just get a generator like the poster above suggested? You can get one under $300. I think you'd be better with a genny like kush posted.. or hooking up a bike to a car alternator with a bunch of amplifiers, inverters and capacitors..
