Update! My very first grow.

  1. What's up guys! Making a new post to compile my progress and update with progress pics. I started with seeds and had them in a shitty grow box for a few weeks. I upgraded my grow rig and transplanted them, shown by the first pic I'll post of the plants. Following will be pics of the next week and the following, which is today. Any advice is greatly appreciated as this is my first attempt at growing. I also don't know when or if I should perform more LST or supercropping. The plants have been topped as of 9 days ago.

My current grow specs are as follows

    4x4x7 grow tent
1000w super HPS hortilux bulb w sun system reflector hood
6 inch exhaust fan, 4 inch oscillating.
Happy frog soil, 5 gallon smart pots, 18/6 current schedule with 80-85 temps, 55 percent humidity.

  4. Hello there. Welcome to the wonderful world of growing your own. LOL I do want to make a suggestion to you. The next time you start seeds, unless you're growing auto strains, start them out in Solo cups. Leave them in the cups until the plant itself is larger than the cup (wide and taller). This is a pretty good indicator that the plant is slightly root bound (which is what you're wanting it to do before you transplant) and is ready to go up a size in pots. Transplant into 1 gallon pots and do the same thing over until you get it into the container you wish to flower in. When you transplant a seedling into soil, it always works on developing it's root system first. While it's doing this, the foliage just kind of sits there and doesn't do much. A tiny plant into a large container of soil just means you're going to wait a long time on it to get it's roots like it wants and back to growing the foliage. You can progress a small plant a lot faster by doing it this way. They will eventually grow regardless of how big the container is unless the grower gets panicked because, to the eye, nothing it happening and waters too much or gives nutes when they're not needed. When you put one into soil, the plant won't need nutes until it's had time to use up what naturally came in the soil itself. Starting them too early will fry your plants. Also, some of the soils sold for growing MJ are "hot" or loaded with too many nutes for a young plant, and the soil itself will often burn them when they're very young. The key to a healthy plant is managing the pH of the water/feeds you give it to the correct range...6.3 to 6.7 for soil grows, growing in proper soil and watering properly. These plants like a very light and arid soil and you don't water them until they've used up at least 80% of the water in the container. Over watering is probably the biggest killer of plants by new growers.

There is a ton of information in the "new grower" threads here on the forum. Many posts are written just for first timer growers and contain the basics that you need to know to grow these without having too many issues. If you're unsure about any part of the process, I suggest you go there and do some reading. The more you know, the smoother it will go and information is most definitely your friend when first starting out. Looks like you're doing well so far though. I see where you say you have a 1000 watt hps bulb to flower under and that is a wonderful light. We flower with 4 per room. Know that the size and density of your buds is directly proportional to how much light they get during flower. We ran 2 lights per room for awhile but about 8 months ago, we added 2 more for a total of 4. Our buds doubled and tripled in size as well as the size of the plants during the flower cycle. Just be care not to overcrowd your light. Generally, I can grow off about 6 plants under one 1000 watt bulb and all the girls get what they need (I rotate the plants throughout the cycle to make sure they get uniform coverage) If you try to do more than that, you just end up with a bunch of shaded plants and kind of shoot yourself in the foot. Take the time to get your plants to a decent size before the flip and then realize that they'll double or triple in size during flower. Keep them as close to the light as possible without burning them and adjust the lights as the plants grow for optimum coverage.

Oh, the topping question. I generally start topping mine a few days after they go from my cloning tray and into the Solo cups. Mine generally stay in the cups for around 10 days and I'll top them a couple of times while they're in the cups. Once they go into 1 gallon pots, they'll get topped a couple more times. Most of the time, I have 10-12 bud sites on each plant by the time they get into the final size container we flower in. I don't really know the difference in LST and all the other fancy names it gets called, I just pinch the tops off the plants where I see it's starting to form a shoot.

The last thing I want you to remember is that they're just weeds. They've survived alone without the aid of man for thousands of years. They'll try their hardest to grow under the most awful conditions and are very hardy plants. You don't have to baby them. They can really put up with a lot. Once you get the basics down, they all grow the same way and it becomes more fun than stress. And upon harvest of your first juicy buds, you're hooked for life!! LOL Enjoy yourself!! Keep up the good work!! TWW

  5. Thank you SO much for the info. These were started in solo cups for 2 or 3 weeks before they were transplanted into the 5 gallons. I'm not sure I can add any more light due to space and temperature constraints. They were topped about 1 week after transplanting, and used the soil only with water for 2 weeks before nutrients started. You really made some excellent points about rotating the plants, I have a few more topics I need to research on now. Thank you!

  6. Pic update of the girls, also including a pic after supercropping 3 of them, I ended up running them all through it eventually. Will post update pics this weekend!

  8. Nah I dont, it just vents into the room. To be honest I'm in an apartment so...yeah I can't just run it out the window. I'm starting to get worried about the smell when it gets into flower...idk. I've been using happy frog soil with straight water for their first 2 weeks and they've been on Cyco Grow a and b for about a week and a half now. Planning on going into flower on April 11th or so. I have no idea what I'm doing I'm just trying to mimicked what you guys have provided haha, thanks for the insight my man. I want to get serious about this growing thing. It can be made into a living where I'm at.
