Unofficial Military Discussion Thread

Discussion in 'General' started by McGriddle, Jul 1, 2012.

  1. Can't help but notice all the new threads popping up regarding the military.

Let's hear some opinions, stories, questions, anything.
I can answer questions regarding the ARNG and some general military questions, but as far as other branches I'm sure there are plenty of people in the city that have answers.

I myself enlisted in the Army National Guard in early May, and I'm scheduled to fly out to Fort Sill for basic training and AIT in September.
Anyone else enlisted or contemplating enlistment?

  2. Great thread idea. If anyone in the city needs some info or a first hand account of someone who served in the Marines Corps. I can help you out. I'm 22 years old and I Just finished a four year tour with the Marines and am now getting my Bachelor's. Then I'm becoming an Officer in the Marines.

  3. dont like brown people, eh?

  4. What was your MOS?

  5. Hi Grasscity.

I am an operations specialist in the danish navy.
This means that I analyze radar images and control the communications from our ship and to other units.

While I was sailing through the mediterranean sea earlier this year I was listening on a communications line there was some drunk sailor who were playing techno music and saying "phillipino monkeeeeey" all the time, untill some (I suppose they were phillipino) other sailors began swearing on the net "fuck you, shut up.. FUCK YOU" with a funny asian accent.. That continued for 3 or 4 days, all times of the day..

Fast forward to two months ago when I was on an excersise in USA. I heard some of the other military ships beginning to make fun on the net, by saying "Phillipino monkeey"
So apperently thats a sailors meme.

On the same excersise we had some other guys yelling out on the net "knock knock" for over an hour, untill they said "ooh.. you guys don't do knock knock jokes? Ding dong"

and contunied all throughout the day with talking shit on the net. A real fun experience when you are used to strict transmission policy :)

Well if your ASVAB score was good you'll have more options for MOS's ( jobs) but if I recall correctly their only good for 2 years. First step, talk to a recruiter, easy as that. You'll have to quit smoking though. They'll drug test you at MEPS. And if you don't have any drug charges, then no matter how much they ask, you've never done any drug including pot. Also, I reccomend the Navy.

  13. I was in the Canadian Navy for 4 years, but I was sea sick so I felt it necesary for both my mental and physical health to leave. I wish I had remustered to an Army trade so I could keep making payments on my car, but I didn't like the idea of starting new and having to do the fresh recruit crap of room inspections and marching.

Its terrible when everyone or most of the crew is sea sick. One time it we got caught in a storm with 7m waves and just about everyone was lining up at the sea heads to throw up, I was surprisingly enough doing better than some others and I tried to take a drink of water at a fountain, but someone had puked in the water fountain and I put my hands all in it, and when the ship listed, puke would slosh out onto my uniform.

Loved being in foreign ports though, like a vacation almost every month or every other month with your best friends.

  14. That's great dude, can I ask how many deployments you had including national?

  15. i did contribute to the thread jackass. your post, however, did nothing.

  16. I get the whole patriotic/personal satisfaction/craze for killing brown people/ i need money for college thing, but i'd never join the military these days knowing whats going on in the world. If it were WW2.... i'd enlist immediately.

  17. I want to join the army i got a 46 on my asvab
how much days do i have to quit smoking before i talk to a recruiter?!
    I want to leave ASAP!

Shit, I've considered the Navy but never thought about sea sickness. I get it bad enough to where I feel like I could die.

The hardest part for me would be actually getting up and doing it, I can never realistically see a point where I would wake up one morning and say "I'm going to see a recruiter" or "I'm going to enlist" let alone actually going in and making the commitment. I enjoy my luxuries way too much and the life style change honestly scares me. How did you guys feel when you first enlisted and the feeling sunk in that you're on your way to basic or when it actually was time to ship out?

What was the hardest thing to deal with during the time you served. How was the average day spent? Would you talk about any intense situations. I've heard many different things from many branches so it'll be nice to hear what some blades have to say.

About the ASVAB test or any military placement test, can you take it and see how you score and what "jobs" would be available?

Have you ever taken seasickness medicine before you got onto a ship? You take it a day or two before in full dose. Take it for a couple days on the ship then taper down. Always take one when bad weather comes in, just at first to be polite haha.

Yes you can take the ASVAB before joining the military without any obligation to serve. Just make it seem like you are really interested in joining so they will be willing to drive you down to the testing center as quick as possible. If you are missing any required paperwork thats needed they will drive you to the right places to get social security cards, and birth certificates needed for the process.

They also run programs were they meet up a couple times a week and excercise with recruits that are about to join, cosidering it, or those that have passed medical processing and are waiting to go to basic. I destroyed everyone at running and endurance except for one guy. Thought I was going to be horrible at running compared to others. They also teach you the oaths, ranks, and how to adress various types of sergeants so you don't end up doing 100 push ups and getting screamed at.

Bring a hoody if its hot in your area. Some of the testing centers go crazy with the AC, I think on purpose. Wear a t-shirt underneath so you can have options between cool or hot. Take time and study on your weakpoints just a little before the test. I wasn't a gearhead when younger so I had my dad explain tools, electricity, and other basics to me. Expect a little bit of arithmatic and some simple algebra if you do well.

Also organizing shapes makes you a better leader in the military's eyes. ( not even shitting you) :D A good vocabulary will also be neccisary for roles that require teamwork. And by a good vocabulary I mean knowing like 30% of the five-seven letter words in our language. The vocab tends to be centered around military/general terms. I remember decimate, obliterate, ambush, and a few others coming up in compare this to that/synonymous questions.

Thanks, good info. I wouldn't quite school at this point but it's a course I may consider afterwords. What could you do going in with something like a Master's Degree in Psychology? Are there jobs for things like giving evaluations or clinical help or do you need to serve before you can get that type of job.
