Under the Black Walnut

Discussion in 'Gardening' started by brilla, Apr 29, 2013.

  1. What have you grown?

    lettuce
onions - funky tasting and not big
    heirloom roses
    daffodils
    yarrow
horrible tasting cukes and tiny tomatoes
    lots of nasty weeds

  2. sunflowers
    dill
no iris directly below, but along outskirts
    local cacti

  3. There are experiments going, but they will not be posted until they have survived a season or two.

  4. What onions ..cukes and tomatoes were these that tasted so horrible ?

  5. Probably any variety grown under a black walnut. The black walnut tree poisons many plants, adds horrible flavor to others. But who knows, maybe this experiment will show which thrive.

  6. Why grow under a BW then ? Seems waste of time and food.

  7. Personally I wouldn't. I think this is just an experiment but growing under the tree does seem odd.

Ohio State has its write up on the black walnut toxicity here.

  8. Well currently, I've got an avacado tree, a peach tree and a nectarine in the vicinity of the black walnut. I've grown some cactus like flowers my neighbor gave me but I'm unsure of their type.

  9. I never knew this info about the black walnut, very cool. A lot of knowledge going around this website, bless!

sweet onions, lemon cukes, black cherry tomatoes.

i think it definitely effected the flavor.

    It's what's in the yard.

My peaches have no problems. Add a mulberry tree to the list. I wish I could grow avocado here.

I am going to have to transplant my fennel now. It's been in a pot, but no longer.
    The dill reseeded.
What zone are you for ginger and tumeric?

i don't think I multiquoted everyone. the cacti are thriving, especially the prickly pear. Pennyroyal has taken off directly at the base. Most of the mint family for that matter. The roses are also unaffected. Rosemary thriving. Yucca. Yellow sorrel.

Thank you for the lists. I've been through a lot of them, and they are always a fun read.

  14. ^ mulberry eh?

Got a mulberry tree and was trying to decide where to put it. Thanks :)
