Ubuntu boots to Terminal?

  1. Ok, so I recently fixed up my old Dell Dimensions. I installed XP Pro and updated my Bios. So when I tried to boot ubuntu now, it boots to terminal. so i type my login and pass word and recieve the followin text.
"Your CPU appears to be lacking expected security protections. Please check your BIOS settings, or for more information. run : usr/bin/check-bios-nx- --verbose. When I try to run this it says there is no such file or directory. I have looked in Bios settings, and I see nothing related to Enabling, or disabling NX.
The thing that has me confused is because I had both OS's running smoothly before I re-installed them
BTW im running Dell BIOS ver. A12
    and Ubuntu 10.4.1 LTS

    Any help would be appreciated!:smoke:

  2. Nobody has any ideas?:(

  3. This is a known issue, and has something to do with an update that you end up installing. You may want to try to reformat and reinstall 10.4.1.

It has to do with the package cpu-checker.

Have you tried hitting Ctrl+Alt+F7 at the terminal screen?

  4. I have tried ctrl-alt-f7, with no success. I will reformat and reinstall later when i get the chance man, ill let u know if it works.
    Thanks for the advice:smoke:

  5. I'd just google that error.

What are your thoughts on updating to a more recent version? Or may I suggest Linux Mint? It's based off of ubuntu but is much more streamlined and has all the restricted repositories enabled and installed for most stuff you'd need. It truly just works out of the box better than any distro I've ever tried. http://www.linuxmint.com I've been using it exclusively for about 4 years. I have yet to be disappointed.

  6. where can i purchase these "ubuntu boots"? I think my girlfriend wants a pair.

  7. Try booting with nomodeset and let know what happens .

  8. I forgot about this thread....I ended up just re-installing ubuntu a couple of weeks ago and everything works just fine now
