Types of Fans (squirrel cage vs. active air)

  1. What is the difference between an 'active air blower' and a 'squirrel cage fan'?

Do they serve the same purpose?

Reason I ask is because on amazon there is a significant price difference. The 465 cfm squirrel cage is $115, while the 465 cfm active air blower is $90. Both are made by HydroFarm.

I'll be using it to vent a 400 watt HPS in a 3 x 5 x 9 closet. I know I probably don't need 465 cfm, but I want to be able to move to a bigger light and bigger room someday. Too much ventilation can't hurt, right?

  2. Squirrel cage fans are noisie but if that's not a concern then I would get the 465 cfm fan. If noise is a concern go with the Vortex blower. My buddy has used both . My buddy has a 2 stage gaden in the same size closet. the 265 cfm squirrel wasn't enough but the 465 cfm Vortex works great.

  3. Thay are both squirrel cage fans. except one has a fancy name.

  4. also known as centrifical (sp?) fans..

  5. Hi there everyone!

Sorry but I am new here and I am starting a grow room in the upcoming weeks and I need to know the amount of CFM (on a Vortex fan connected to an air filter) I need to grow in a room that is 6x6. Also, is the Vortex blower really that quieter than a squirrel cage fan? I'm all about stealth.

I'll be using an air filter called 'odor sok' to remove any smell that might leak out the grow room. If anyone is familiar with this product please fill me in on the details.

    TY.

  6. Don't know if the oder sok will work. Use a filter can. And the vortex blowers make half the noise. For a 6x6 room I would use a fan that has close to 700cfm.

  7. Sorry I forgot to mention that I am on a low budget spending limit and the odor sok is the cheapest filter that I can find at the moment that is below 100 dollars.

Thanks for the help WhiteHaze. Right now I am looking at a 747cfm Vortex blower.

  8. Just keep the temp in your room below 90 degrees and you should be fine.

  9. Great find on the stanley blower. I might give this baby a try.
