From what little I can understand, this is horrifying. However, my strong suit is not international financial markets. Could someone explain to me exactly how this fraud worked? I read all the articles in full, but I'm just can't wrap my head around how this all actually went down. I just know that a lot of money was gained by crook, by a lot of people at the highest level.

Their explanation for why there was such a ridiculous amount of money is that the counterfeiters were silly Europeans that didn't know $1 billion US dollars was a lot of money. This excuse might have worked before every common criminal had access to google.

Hopefully...I still believe this is going to happen, but I now get a sense of 'oh great, another false hope' whenever I hear about corruption and various things that suggest that this might actually occur...maybe this is different, though. I sure hope so!
