transporting seedlings - hiking

  1. What techniques do you use to protect your seedlings when transplanting them to your grow location? I know some of you have some brilliant innovative techniques - I would love to learn!

  2. plant seed in red drinking cup, tape another upsidedown as a lid. put cardboard in bottom of backpack, add layer of cups, then another sheet of cardboard if neccessary then another stack of cups

  3. I use a cooler that is the size of a case of beer, seedlings in a plastic cup and pressed together in the cooler so they dont move. cooler on the shoulder dog on a leash.....

  4. If you use those Jiffy peat pellets, each one will fit perfectly in an empty egg carton. Its an easy way to carry several dozen seedlings in a backpack.

  5. What about seedlings in small square peat pots? Arranged tightly in shoeboxes, which would then be stacked securely in a backpack? Upon transplanting, the bottoms of the peat pots could be cut out to allow easier penetration of the tap root into its new soil. (which has been previously mulched and fertilized) Due to the extreme remoteness of my plantations 20-30 km and 500 metres in elevation (on foot) from my dropoff point, I am facing a similar dilemma. Any feedback on this possible method would be greatly appreciated.
