Transporting large amounts of soil by foot?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Outdoors' started by Sickleg, Feb 6, 2011.

  1. Hey guys, this will be my first season growing (extremely excited) and I do have one question looming in my mind. How in the world am I going to get all of this soil back to my spots? It is about a .9 mile walk from my front door out to my area I am scoping out and I have to bring roughly a yard of compost out there.

My current idea is to buy a large backpack (heres a great one I found online for CHEAP! Amazon.com: Olive Drab - Korean Army Surplus 2-Strap Nylon Duffle Bag, Used: Clothing) and a pack of black trash bags. I'll put the trash bag in the pack and then fill the bag up with a shovel. According to my calculations, this pack will be able to hole about 6 cubic feet of soil and it will be HEAVY (probably over 200 lbs).

Anyone have a better idea? Thanks!

  2. Uhh your back will not be able to support over 200+ pounds, I deadlift 225 pounds and thats simple a lifting exercise, and a tiring one at that. You will need to split that weight up to even hope to move it.

  3. Really? I'm fairly certain I could do 150-170 considering some soldiers carry up to 130 pound of gear and thats going into combat!

I can squat 265 max, and lift weights every day m-f, so I'm confident I could lug 160 a mile into the woods since a good 2/3 of it will be on a well beaten path.

    Does 160 lbs sound reasonable?

  4. one bag at a time son. No need to hurt yourself tryin be hulk hogan

think about your gona be making lot of noise movin all that through at once sound like a damn bear walking through

  5. not a bad idea... ive been thinking myself about using a different technique to transport more soil and im liking this type of backpack. i could only transfer 10 gallons at a time with the technique i was using last year so im sure i could move at least 20 in this pack? anyone have experience moving soil in a pack like this?

  6. i plan on getting like a 50gal black wheeled garbage can, put as much as i can fit in there then wheel it out to the spot, probably move all my shit in 3 or 4 trips, plan on using the can as my water source too so it works out

  7. I'm buying bulk compost (not in bags). 1/2yd-1yd

Keep the ideas coming guys, I know this is a problem every outdoor grower faces so we have to be able to come up with something.

  8. If being seen isn't an issue I'd use a wagon or wheelbarrow.

  9. a bike and a backpack is my style......
what about a wheel barrel or a hand cart with a trash can on it?
    a shopping cart?

  10. I plan on carrying roughly 15 bags of soil to my site, and it is a 0.5 mile walk from the road. probably doing one at a time and go at 4 or 5 a.m. Unless you have more than one person, i have nothing to suggest. Id love to see a good idea come out of this!

  11. lol... a shopping cart through the woods?

  12. I prefer a dolly aka hand cart. Thats about your only option or the good ole fashion way.

  13. start trecking your stuff out there right now little by little, getting the spots prepped
break up your work load, thats what winter is for.

  14. I am planning on scaling up operations this year and thought about that same questions. My answer was getting the soil as dry as possible...theres a lot of creeks around here so carrying water isn't needed.

  15. We have a couple of winners here........I use the bike and and backpack method myself and start bringing it out in March.

  16. lolz thanks
but i came to realize that moveing 18 CU.FT. of soil in a back pack is no easy task... a specially since my back pack only held 1 CU.FT. plus a 1 mile bike ride.
18X trips was to much for me....IDK what i was thinking.......

Had my boy come with his truck to help me out...:hello:..

  17. Seems to me you may have just broken the first rule of Grow Club......

  18. One yard of soil would fill 50, 5 gal containers. You will need to make 30-50 trips to the site for this project, doesn't sound like a very productive use of time. Jones has come to that conclusion and is only trying to move 1/2 yard of soil.

  19. Just use the soil that is there and bring addmentments with you.

  20. I'm just gonna use a backpack and lug in 5 gallons at a time since I'm only growing a few plants.

I could carry 10 gallons easily but I don't have a big backpack.
