Total Volume of Water vs. Specific Tank Size.

  1. From all I've read so far, with a hydroponics system, you need 5 gallons of water per plant.
But I seem to recall seeing designs of large hydro-grows occurring with far smaller containers with what I can only assume to be a large reservoir.

Basically I'm very curious as to how this works for the plants as I'd quite like to set one up myself and this area seems appropriate since I'll have a go at making it once I've gotten some feedback on what's best.
Obviously they need room for the roots, an air-pump, etc. but considering this is my first grow, I'm sadly inexperienced in terms of root growth.

Would it be better with a constant flow-throw of water or do roots prefer calm(ish) waters?
Is there a 'best' amount of water for the plants or is it only a vague estimate?

Anything else you can think of would be greatly appreciated :)
