Topped plants and the main stalk in split is this normal?

  1. I am new to topping and I am having a problem. This is only my 2nd attempt at topping and scrog.

Both times after the plant gets big the stalk will split at the top about an inch or so long where the colas come out. They seem to tolerate it but is this normal and if not what am I doing wrong?

  2. I think you cut to low when you topped, should leave an inch nub, or you have big heavy colas and it's pulling.

  3. A bit of preventive maintenance is to gently crush the stem between finger and thumb during veg which will cause it to form a sort of callus or knot at that juncture making it less likely to split.

  4. Thanks for the info!!

My nodes have been really close together. I am growing indica strains.

Should I let it grow a node or 2 above where I am going to top it?

  5. Just let it grow enough to leave you with a little nub after you cut it, no need to grow an extra 2 nodes. Peace.
