Toping question

well I read about toping but I don't read or see anything about it in the outdoor grow forum, so is their a reason for this? How early should I top when outdoors? and why is it some peaple say toping increases yield, yet some say it doesnt and it just makes the plant grow wider than tall, and doese toping increase the need for assistance on holding my plant up?
