Too much light for seedlings?

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by ghunter, Dec 29, 2010.

  1. Ok. 2 grows under my belt. Both successful with all the help from here but both with trauma of some nature along the way. Each one was progressively better but I want to improve each one from here out so the question ... Can a seedling get TOO much light? I am running 24/0 for veg.

In the past I started my seedlings in low light and built up from there but in this grow I need all my available light just to bring the temp up to an acceptable level considering my conditions. They broke shell today and are in party cups with bags under a trusted 90W UFO and 4 26W CFL's

Too much too soon? or all good?

    Thanks

  2. yes a seedling can. i like to have seedlings and clones about 24" away from my light sorce for the to start (im also running 300watt T5's and 250watt MH), and let them grow into the light
ur cfls could be 12-18" away the first week then get them closer 6-12" there after

  3. 24" away?I had mine 12" away and seedlings were stretching.I have them 6 in. away at day4 and they are doing great.

  4. It certainly is possible to give seedlings too much light. Not with a few household-replacement CFLs, though. Can't speak to the lighting impact of the LED.

If in doubt start at a distance and then move a little closer every day or two.

  5. yes they can get to much light they are delicate at that age lol. i dont know much about led but with a hid system if you used it for a seedling you would have to keep it far away. so i usually just use cfls till the 2 set of true leaves come in then i start up the MH( or in your case led). also since the seedlings are so small they cant use all that light at once so it is a wast of money using all that light in the start.

    Happy Grow

  6. Thanks guys. I think I will build a little cardboard "ring" around them to they only receive the LED light for a week or so.

  7. I have put seedlings under a mh too early and while 4 did well under it the 5th dried out and shriveled up over night. When I checked them in the morning it was past dead. Other than that one time I generally put them under a weak flourescent for the first week after sprouting. But, this last start up I ran into your problem. I have been set up for running during spring/summer/fall and because of my location my area was freezing. I had to do alot of work to get it set up for winter time. I am also running my lights 24/0 so that temps dont drop close to freezing when the lights go out. What I did was just put my flourescent over the plants basically shading them from the intense MH but left the MH on for heat. Seemed to work well. 3 weeks in and they didnt shrivel and die. Just to clarify, I did take the flourescent out after the first week. Last 2 weeks have been purely MH.

  8. im running hids and 300watt t5's not CFL's

  9. My sprout shriveled up cuz the cfls were like 4" away. Ugh I fucked myself over on that one, hopefully it'll recover. But if it don't I got 4 more plants 2 weeks older than my sprouts so no big loss.

Thing is I moved the lights closer and in about 3 hours my baby shriveled up.
Worse comes to worse I'll sex the others and just put clones in the seedlings place.

    Still upset tho.

  10. I have seen where this was discussed often in many other threads. It always makes me wonder if the issue is light or heat. If I were betting, I would pick heat, but I have never seen what I consider a valid experiment where the two could be differentiated.

  11. Well of course it was the heat. What else could it have been? The intensity of the lights?

People say cfls dont run hot; bs. Leave anything on for 24/7 long enough and its gonna get hot. Thing is I know better than this its just I figured a little closer wouldnt hurt. Also it only happened in like 3 hours which is what really surprised me.

    I smoked a bowl and relaxed a bit:smoke:

I'm hoping for at least 3 girls, any more and its just the fates shining on me.

  12. My experience has been when starting seedlings, is that anything more than a 20/4 and 32w t8 @ lower than 8" is overkill. When the seedling is trying to get away from the light or raising its cotyledon - you're either blasting it with too much light, or you are overheating the poor ladies. (one is not exclusive to the other) After her second set of leaves come in, I'll kick on another tube until its time for 1 gallon transplant.
