If you want a decent lower priced led, look at mars-hydro.. I personally use one. It works well. I have the mars 2 1200. Actual power draw is 600 watts. The mars 2 utilizes 5 watt LEDs.. Works great. I am using in a growlab 120. Which is 3'11" x 3'11". Very nice light..
This video from monster gardens shows the internals of a gereric led, http://youtu.be/Ywlk3Icu-ig. Like nuker121hydro mentioned, stick with 5w diodes, 3w is old tech. You'll notice the industry is moving to 5w diodes and they are dumping the 3w on the market cheap for that reason.
