Tolerance Issue/Question Help!

Discussion in 'Experienced Cannabis Enthusiasts' started by keno, Oct 10, 2007.

  1. I'll give you all the important information before I jump right in and ask the questions. If you don't want to read all of this just scroll down for the cliff notes.

I smoked for my first time in April of 2007. The first week I smoked three times. Then when I got back to my apartment (I smoked for the first time while visiting my family at home; with family, btw) I bought a fourth oz. Between me and a buddy of mine it lasted about a month.

The quarter ounce per month lasted for May and June as well (split between my friend and myself each time). When summer rolled around and I had some time off I started to smoke more, almost daily. During July and August I smoked about two ounces with my friend (combined, so about an ounce each month). Shortly before Sept. started we noticed that we weren't getting as high as we used to, the high wasn't lasting as long, and it took more weed to get us as high. I realize this is all normal, please continue reading. So given all of that we decided to take a two week tolerance break to try and fix the issue.

So I didn't smoke from late August until Sept. 9. When I smoked again for the first time it was great, I got really high again. The first week back was like a celebration though (two birthdays, a lot of end of summer partying, etc.), so we were basically smoking all day every day (from 4PM onward). That first week back I went through an ounce with my friend. Towards the end of the week I began to notice again that my tolerance was building up quickly.

Needless to say that we fell down a slippery slope and during the month between Sept. 9 and now we smoked 3 ounces.

So now cliff notes before I continue:
Smoking history: First time in April 2007. Quarter ounce per month split between two people for April/May/June. An ounce a month split between two people for July/August. Three (3) ounces in September split between the two of us.

During this month of Sept. we were smoking a TON. Because I had just come off of a break it was great at first. However towards the end of the month I began to become what I would call "immune" to weed. For instance, last Saturday my friend and I went and picked up a quarter ounce of some dank stuff from my local hero (dealer). We smoked it all in that day. And not only did we smoke it all in one day, I didn't even get what I would like to call "really high". At best I felt pretty buzzed, about the equivalent of just drinking a few shots of alcohol. Now before you go and write off the weed as schwag or something, I'll tell you straight out that it was dank. If you've seen the macros of my pickups on these forums you'll know that I know what dank is. And I suppose I shouldn't say I never got "really high". Every time I smoked that day, if I smoked enough I would get really high. But then it would just wear off after only a few minutes and I'd be left feeling buzzed for an hour or so until I smoked again.

    So my questions:

    Is this normal?
How can I prevent this from happening?
Would it be more beneficial to smoke less coming off a break as to not restart my tolerance?
How long of a break do you recommend to get back to where I was at around June (in terms of how easy it was to get high, how the high felt, etc.)?
    Any other suggestions or comments?

    I appreciate it everyone :smoke:

Oh, and if it matters: I'm overweight, however I do exercise daily (1 hour cardio), lift weights three times a week, and drink about a gallon of water a day. Not sure if you need to know this or not in order to answer my questions.

EDIT: OK so I realized I had a couple more questions. I've been hearing a lot about hash and mixing it with weed or something (sorry if this sounds like I don't know anything, but I'm a strictly weed type of guy) to get a better/longer high or something? What is hash? What is its legality status in CA? How do you ingest it with weed? Do you smoke it? How much does it cost and for how much? Does it make a noticeable difference to the duration/severity/anything of your high? Thanks again.

  2. Is this normal?
    Yes.

How can I prevent this from happening?
    Read below. (suggestions/comments)

Would it be more beneficial to smoke less coming off a break as to not restart my tolerance?
Of course it would. 2 weeks isn't really a long break. Obviously long enough to empty most of your system out, but being overweight, theres a good chance theres still quite a bit there after 2 weeks even. And when you smoke, its building upon that... you get used to the feeling much faster.

How long of a break do you recommend to get back to where I was at around June (in terms of how easy it was to get high, how the high felt, etc.)?
A month. I'm starting my 1 month tolerance break after not having one that long in about a year. I wasn't so sure about it until I smoked 2 joints and 4 bowls of mids among 5 people last night and didnt even get a buzz.

    Any other suggestions or comments?
Well. My last time I took a short T break it was 2weeks long, and I noticed the exact same things you did. I picked up an ounce just for myself after my tolerance break and immediately rolled up a joint. Man did it feel good, but not anywhere near at all from what I expected, but to be fair I was so used to smoking joints/blunts all day every day (Iv noticed joints/blunts raise your tolerance MUCH faster than bowls). But... within 2 days after I was back to square one, right where I left off.

I believe a lot of it has to do with just being used to the high feeling. Im sure a lot of people would back me up on this: You buy an ounce of some quality dank, and a gram of some lesser quality, but still dank bud. You set aside the gram and smoke the ounce, but you realize you don't seem to feel it as much as when you first started packin bowls outta that ounce. You take the gram and smoke it... WOW! Your actually much higher than the better dank! Why? Because its not the same thing over and over. Its not just tolerance, its being used to the feeling. With such a short break, its easier for your body to adjust back into the swing of things like they were before, especially since you were smoking a lot more... it was like you were forcing it back.

When I come off T breaks, I like a nice session, and then not smoke again for about a week. Slowly work your way back into the game, don't dive head first, ya know?

As for the hash, its just a different form of weed, its no different, basically a higher percentage of THC which basically means you smoke less. If you want to make your highs LAST, I suggest making firecrackers (http://forum.grasscity.com/recreati...kers-work-detailed-instructions-pictures.html) But just a tip, instead of peanut butter + crackers, I suggest honey graham crackers and nutella... makes it taste like a cookie, not like shit :D

But be warned... ingesting weed can have some pretty unpredictable effects. My first time w/ firecrackers I literally could not move, speak... I had to focus on my breathing because I couldn't even do that... I was FUCKED from like 8pm, passed out around 1am, woke up still fucked up at 8am. Other few times Iv done fireworks with the same amount (usually a little more) I either just felt pretty relaxed, or nothing. But I REALLY do recommend firecrackers. Ingesting cannabis is something every stoner should do AT LEAST once.

Well... I dunno if I missed anything, my mind wanders too much so its hard for me to type a lot... sooo GOOD LUCK N' HAVE FUN! Hope iv helped.

  3. Thanks for the response. I've actually tried all different types of edibles, from cookies to brownies to firecrackers... None of it really seems to affect me as much as smoking. And I think you may be onto something with the joints/blunts thing. I used to smoke strictly from a nice glass bong but then over the summer I started rolling when I got a grinder and then switched to like 70% joints/blunts and 30% bong. It was shortly thereafter when my tolerance spiked, so that may be it. Thanks for all the advice.

Anyone else have any input? I'd like to know more about hash and hash oil if possible. Thanks again everyone.

  4. I agree with a lot of what's already been said. To enjoy the same level of high, you either need to devert to using a bowl/bong or spread out smoking a bit. Having a few different strands on hand doesn't hurt ;). As you continue to lose weight (I assume that's why you exercise) your tolerance go down, as metabolism increases. Keep exercising.
