toking in recovery?

Discussion in 'Experienced Cannabis Enthusiasts' started by sativacyborg, Feb 10, 2010.

  1. I am curious as to weather or not anyone on here has any experience with addiction recovery and cannabis. My problem lies in alcohol and other substances. Just interested to see what everyone has to say.

  2. Weed isn't a drug. I say enjoy it.

  3. i know people that have used weed to help them get off things that are far worse. just gotta be honest with ur self, anything can be abused.

  4. Lets be honest about this.

You already have an addictive personality.

You will replace one addiction with the other.

You need to focus on your health and getting addicted to that.

  5. For someone who has been through the NA/AA 12 step programs when I was younger. ( Due to a criminal history)

This is pretty much a no brainer if you go to a meeting so it's good you asked here.

Basically you can't really use ANY type of drug ( yes alcohol is a drug) if you are trying to get sober. ( duh!)

The problem with using something like MJ is that your brain will start getting annoyed that you are still being under the influence but it isn't what it wants, you may start smoking more and more but eventually because you are still using, you will eventually go back to alcohol. You need a completely clear mind.

( I am not advocating or promoting the 12 steps, this is just how they do things)

If you are an alcoholic then you really NEED to stay completely sober, in order to keep staying sober.

It may work fine for a year or two but eventually you'll start drinking again.

Sorry if I am assuming too much.

  6. My Father has 12 years sober. He also quit smoking cigs during this time. He went to Reno and had one cigar a year ago and is back to 4 packs a day. He has a highly addictive personality and a little becomes a lot in no time flat.

He loves weed but knows he would be back doing crank in no time if he quit everything.

Prior to this time he tried to quit drinking while still doing Crank and weed and never was able to keep off the booze. So he had to decide for himself to stop it all. that's where you are right now. It's a choice you have to make based on how well you know, who you are.

If you decide to keep smoking pot and going to AA you may not be fully supported by those around you. Your sponsor would most likely, not be ok with it. Or you would have to lie and that is not the type of relationship with a sponsor that promotes success.

Good luck in whatever you do tho..

  7. This is the truth. Sure, weed may be less harmful than other shit you're addicted to, but if you just go from abusing alcohol to abusing weed, you're basically right back where you started.

If you want to quit abusing substances all together, then fuck trying to use weed to get yourself clean of other shit, because chances are you'll end up just continuing to smoke weed even after you're off alcohol or whatever.

On the other hand, if you're trying to quit drinking because it is the effects of drinking itself that are causing you problems (health problems, drunk driving problems, etc...) then I don't see a problem with smoking herb to help you get away from another substance.

Just know though that you CAN abuse weed despite how many people (especially around grasscity and similar forums) say that you can smoke all day every day and not be abusing it.

Ultimately, it's up to you, but personally if I were trying to just quit drinking or using harder drugs or the sake of my health or the effect that that particular substance had on me, I know I could use herb to make it a much easier time, however I would be careful as not abuse it and use it just to help you get through the tough times and keep it to just recreational use.

  8. Ok. I have a real strong opinion on this subject mainly because I know how it is to be an addict (once you become it you always are sry) as I was addicted to H for about a year and still struggle with my recovery. But and yes a big BUT. IMO when and if i feel like using H I just get blasted off a few bowls. It does help me. It gets my mind off of things and just helps you relax and really take into perspective what the hell you could of done if you used. Now I am sure everytime you feel like using you may not be in a situation where you can blaze. And yes I go to NA meetings NIGHTLY and yes marijuana is still a drug. But like i said in my opinion it does help ease the cravings of using, for me anyway. Now if you have an extremely addictive personality and dont think you can handle smoking some ganja and not using whatever your substance of choice. Then by all means find something else to do and dont smoke. I know its a tough battle but if it works for you to stay clean off something worse. Then whos to tell y ou not do to it. +rep cuz I know what its like bro.

  9. Some people just need to abuse drugs, sometimes because of their lives, sometimes because of their personality or sometimes because of the drug. Marijuana is a drug; claiming that it isn't is just as bad as when anti-pot people claim that weed makes you insane - both statements comes from love of ganja/hate of ganja. Everything you can consume in any way, except for food, are considered to be drugs. Aspirin is a drug. Coffee is a drug. If you can eat it, snort it, smoke it or put it into your body in any way and the purpose of the active ingredients isn't to satisfy hunger/thirst, then it's a drug..

Anyway, I'm a dick for bringing up the old discussion of weed=drug or not.. Sorry, op.. Anyway, if you're a person with an addiction-personality you'll probably feel addicted to marijuana - but that's way better than being addicted to alcohol and harder drugs, right? Cannabis is suspected to be helpful for people trying to quit heroin and coke. I know many people who smoke cigarettes; in periods where they smoke much cannabis they almost don't touch tobacco. I've also experienced that myself. And I can only imagine that a nice strong indica could take the peak off the physical symptoms of withdrawal from substances that are physically addictive..

No matter whether it's good for beating addiction or not, it's certainly not bad..

  10. It all depends on the person.. I had a cocaine problem that lasted about 5 or 6 months, and eventually quit, largely with the aid of weed.. I smoke daily and have for the last 14 months without using any other substances. Before, I casually smoked weed and was more of the "partier" type, which eventually lead to bad habits.

You need to make full on lifestyle changes first and foremost though before you think of self medicating.
