Hello people, I have a question about tires for my truck. I know I probably look like an idiot but I really don't know a lot about vehicles which is why I am here. I figure I could do a bunch of research and figure it out but it seems easier if someone knowledgable could give me a straight answer rather than me trying to figure something out and wasting a bunch of money. Anyway, I currently have an '01 Chevy Silverado with LT265\R16 tires on it, which are good and work, but I live out in the country and as this past winter has shown any amount of snow or ice will leave me unable to get out of my driveway or up my street (I live halfway on a hill, part of my basement is underground and part of it is above ground if that tells you anything). One of my friends was telling me he had this same problem with his F150, even just getting it stuck in wet grass with the stock tires that were on it so he put some bigger ones on and it fixed the problem. I'm not looking to build a monster truck or anything, this is more of a problem of neccesity as getting to work every day is a huge priority to me. Can anyone maybe tell me a size that would fit on my vehicle that may help me circumvent this problem? It would be much appreciated, thank you.
I think a good set of winter tires and some weight in the tray should do the trick Not the size of the tires that counts, its all about the threads
Cool, thanks for the help. I've thought about weighing the back down but its hard to find anything without A) looking like a hillbilly with your bed full of junk or B) paying a bunch of money for sandbags or gravel and stuff.
Keep the stock size. You should invest in some studded snow tires if you're really having problems. You can get them just for the back too, no big deal unless you're having problems cornering in the snow as well. My ulitmate suggestion is 6 or so sandbags in the back, directly over the wheels. Weight balance is what counts. -If you dont want to spring for useless sand bags, buy something that you use in bulk. Like dog food or soft water pellets or fire wood or something.
Invest in a 4x4. Even with the best tires.. your going to get stuck if there is more then a ft of snow :\ find some semi Drums.. or something,, and tie them in the back of the truck.. Something heavy but small right over the rear axle.
Yeah. It's a mudding/rock crawling technique. if you encounter ice or snow.. drop the PSI in your tires to about 10-15lbs. and you will grip 30x better. Just don't forget to air them up. I've seen people just drive for days like that and Ruin all there tires.
