So, a little backstory for you guys. My plants are 19 days old now (since the planting of the germinated seeds). At the time this problem started they were only given Sunshine Mix #4, topdressed with Earthworm Castings, and given RO water and CFL light 18/6. I've since transplanted them but this problem started before that. My first guess was that maybe the singing (tip nearly falling off the plant in one case) was due to the CFL being too close to some of the plants. But I think I also let the plants get a little too dry at one point. I was used to watering every 2 days but I had introduced a fan, and didn't check the dryness after the first day. Anyway, here are the pics. Just thought I'd include a little information rather than make you guys guess. Thanks. First picture: Brown tips. Some browning on the middle of the leaves. Second picture: Same plant. Picture showing closer view of bottom leaf that is just hanging on. Third picture: First leaves that bloomed after cotyledon showing some yellowing on some of the plants. Nitrogen deficiency? Fourth picture: Some weird white coloring on the middle of one of the leaves.
I suppose I should add: the reason I was misting is because some of my earlier leaves have been feeling odd. A very dry feel to them. They feel different when touching them with the tips of my fingers, I'm not sure quite how to explain it. The new growth feels good, like it is retaining moisture well. I figured the water would maybe help rehydrate the leaves. However maybe they had the opposite effect by acting as a magnifier to bake the leaves.
Been sick myself the past few days, hoping im doin better today.Read yr question on over nutes on sg thread jus now,so ill post here.In my op,all 4 of your pics show signs of over nutes to me.Ive seen it and done it before. Like sg said, alot of it is related to certain strains, genetic. Some like nutes, some like less.Your plant strain likes less.Who knows why they do it,or why exactly. For now,the fix is to just give water on schedule,do not over-under water. It should line them out as they grow. To avoid this with new plants, start them in a less hot soil, maybe even plain potting soil... Also,in my op,the rough feeling leafs was also caused by the over-nute too.Altho i don't actually touch my leafs.I can see the uneven growth.. its not because they dried out.So stop misting them.I never misted a plant in my life. plus, them turning towards your cfl,is not causing them to twist. They will grow towards light, where ever the light is,without twisting...i hope all this helps explain things.
Just wanted to update this thread before I unsubscribe it in case anybody comes across their plants doing similar things and wants to know what likely caused mine. The most likely explanation with everything I saw and experienced since then is that when I watered the lower leaves got wet and a little soil was left on them. I tried cleaning them off but couldn't get all of it. Anyway, the microbes went to work and started feeding on the leaves hence why only the lowest sets of leaves were affected. As they get close to death I've been peeling them off and my plants are doing absolutely great.
Just wanted to update once again to let people know that the updated explanation of what was probably going on is that I used some bad compost (dull grey) and it was toxic to my plants. The problem spread from the tips of my plants to other areas that couldn't have been covered in soil and microbes from them touching the water. Best of luck to everybody else's plants!
