Tipping Budtenders?

Discussion in 'Medical Cannabis: Treatments & Patient Experiences' started by 45Wiz, Dec 26, 2010.

  1. I just got my medical card a couple weeks ago. I've been to the same dispensary 3-4 times, and today I noticed they have a tip jar.
Should I be tipping them everytime? If so, how much?
    Thanks

  2. Fuck that, they're alredy overcharging on the bud.

  3. This. If the prices are good go for it, otherwise fuuck it they're already making shit loads of profit off the bud.

  4. Tipping is entirely up to you. Typically your budtender is NOT the owner of the shop, and is making minimum wage or working for free/reduced medicine.

If you get good service, maybe a freebie every now and then, why not?

My collectives don't have tip jars, they collect money for charities, when I can, I drop some dough in.

  5. "budtender"

    lol irl

  6. The job of a budtender can include various duties, but always involves the assistance of bud selection, weighing of such and the transaction of reimbursement.

Some end up running the club/co-op/store/dispensary by themselves, which includes reception/verification, security and buying from vendors.

Budtender is the term, love it or not.

  7. And, no. I never tip them.

  8. My owner and his budtenders are seriously some
really great people, and basically I'm there every
week or so spending money. They're not in it for
profit or the wrong reasons, and at first it looked
like they weren't gonna make it, but they flourished.

Sometimes I'll make them munchies like cake or
cookies, whatever...they give me so many freebies
and even if I didn't have money, they would still give
me a free gram every week if I wanted.

So every once in awhile I'll do nice things for them
or I work for them to help out, that's their tip.

  9. I am a budtender in a Colorado and have worked in our MMC for about 18 months now.

Over that period I have recieved tips just occasionally.

I make more than minimum wage and it is our policy to donate any tips to Sensible Colorado which is a local grassroots organization dedicated to sensible drug policy.

I don't expect tips but I like to know that people appreciate the good service that we give them.

At our shop an eighth costs 55 for non-members. We get complaints that this is too much and that shop owners that charge this much are gouging their patients.

I don't know about all of you but before it was legal I was paying $55 for the funk from a dealer.

Consider that you add rent, employees, insurance, business partners, products, and the cost of growing, the profit margin isn't as big as you might think. We're above water, but running a professional business costs more than many people recognize.

If you want to pay $30 for an 1/8th, around here, you get what you pay for and you certainly aren't smoking Bio-Diesel.

  10. Where I live good stuff is at least $60 for an 8th. Let alone we can't just walk into a store and choose what we please.

  11. everyone saying that they charge too much should remember that EVERYONE charges too much for weed. ahaaaa. it is just a weed, and its legal equivalent go for dirt cheap. Like, you could buy a metric ton of wheat or something for the same price as an expensive ounce of weed. Its ridiculous.

they work on incredibly tight profit margins due to the laws and restrictions, so its not there fault they have to charge that much. Sure its legal, but that doesn't mean its easy. I would tip, even if its just some spare change. These guys are the first step to legalisation.. lets not shut them all down..

  12. Id only tip them if they tipped me

  13. Not only do you not get to shop for strains, but you don't have someone standing in front of you who has an extensive knowledge of genetics presenting 15 different jars of funk like you wouldn't believe.

Nothing gives you perspective on genetics and how unique each strain is than being able to directly compare them.

And hey, if you think your budtender knew his/her stuff and gave you nice looking nugs, why not throw them a few bucks. Don't feel obligated. In my opinion tips should never be obligatory, you give them when you think someone earned it.

I am in the hospitality industry.

We deal with people all day. Every customer that comes in always wants "Just a little extra...". Most times, the customer will get what they want. Their tip, however, is not sustainable enough to cover the following:

The net loss of the product itself
The risk I took to get free stuff for you
The amount of time/quality of service I took from other customers because of you
The genuine caring that I gave you
    AKA- Not Worth It.

Edit: One more point, if I may. The guys behind the counter are generally -not- responsible for the price of the weed. It takes money to run a business. These clerks may make even let than you do!

If you are in the hospitality industry, you would know how this feels. Sometimes, we really do try our hardest to please other people, and it's never good enough. We will remember your face, and as staff, we will talk about you. If you frequent ANY establishment, make sure you treat your hosts well. Make conversation, and if applicable ALWAYS TIP. In the long run, they will give you more than you have given them.

Be genuine. I know from experience.

  15. Give em an extra $ here and there unless it hurts you

  16. I'm in CO.
Fuck 55 an eigth half of these dispensarys need to get with the times...
I'm smoking Raskal's OG Kush (fire cut) 45$ an eigth...
Fuck bio-diesel, if the diesel isn't AJ's cut, Ganesh or IBL who want's that shit anyway?
To sum it up I don't tip the bud tender.
When I buy edibles i'll tip them with some of my own bud that I grow, they always seem to like that.

  17. Tipping for anything is ridiculous unless you feel that person went out of their way to do you something.

Why the hell should I spend 5 bucks for a coors light at the bar...then throw another $2-5 for a tip...for them reaching over and grabbing a beer and opening it for me? No thanks! I've worked in 20 degree weather outside cutting tubes in a water spray cooled saw...so freezing my hand and loosing feeling everytime I reach in (every couple mins) at that temp.

Was there anyone running over to hand me money for that? Fk no..it's work!

No sympathy for people who don't go above and beyond their call.

Some waitresses do make 2-4 bucks an hr plus tips.. That's just a fucked deal in our society.. I typically do tip at the end of a meal or many beers, as long as they didn't leave me hanging.

Just ridiculous that nobody moves or does anything without being powered by $$$greed$$$........ah i'm rambling

  18. But if you tip them then they might decided to tip you.

  19. you know one unfortunate thing is the main thing that would make me tip someone is if the recommend something that turns out to be amazingly good. Problem is by then i am at home so i would have to tip them next time or something

  20. If they're lucky enough to be a fuckin budtender instead of some of the countless other shitty jobs that would pay the same then I don't think they deserve a tip haha.

I washed dishes for 2 years for minimum wage when I was a teenager, didn't get a $1 in tips the entire time. That was a shitty hard disgusting job. I would have killed to be weighin out buds all day and givin recommendations to stoners on what amazing dispensary products to buy.

Not to be a dick I'm jus sayin, that's a sweet job assuming it isn't your only source of income, I don't think people who do that all day are really worthy of my money, I'd rather give it to someone doing a hard job
